Way Too Filmi

I’m having chai whilst watching new Hindi films or singing along to old filmi soundtracks
Or convince her to join BlueSky so we can get in the weeds about Hindi film studios 😂 PS if you do ask her, as a Point of Info, Mangal Pandey was not AK Productions

I’ve never watched Laadla or Sherni so both are on my list for the weekend, thanks for the recommendations

Lovely episode as always but Pitu poopooing on Aamir Khan Productions is crazy. They made Dangal, Laapata Ladies, Taare Zameen Par, Talaash, Jaane Tu, Delhi Belly & Lagaan. They’ve had a poor run the last couple of years but overall it’s probably the best studio in terms of quality of output.

Ma Behen gives those names to women whose lives are anything but spotless. They are judged, constrained, denied control over their own image, yet they push toward agency on their own terms. The film restores the dignity of those names by returning them to women who refuse to be cleaned up for anyone

In the 80s, a wildly popular Nirma detergent ad used the names of 4 icons in the jingle “Hema, Rekha, Jaya aur Sushma sabki pasand Nirma”

These women who defined Hindi cinema, were reduced to avatars of domestic purity. Their power repurposed into a dream of spotless homes & compliant femininity.

Sunil Dutt, for me, is sincere & grounded but didn’t have the inner shading or spontaneity of the greats. In good films he’s strong but in weak films I find him stiff, earnest & uncompelling

… The stakes keep escalating, and the film never forgets that a disaster story only works if you care about the people trapped inside it.

It’s earnest, ambitious, and strangely comforting; a reminder of a moment when Hindi films swung big and meant every second of it

I had never seen it, but I’m so glad I now have. A masala disaster movie that isn’t subtle or tidy, but is alive. Once the train leaves Delhi, after an hour of build up, the film finds its rhythm, and the action is surprisingly sharp for its time…

Alia aligned with projects that give women real interiority. Deepika aligned with directors who build big worlds.

Alia gets roles. Deepika gets spectacle but as a side player, not the focus. Her incredible 2015 now feels like an anomaly, sadly.

Amazing, thank you so much. I was surprised by Pitu’s comfort watches, not gonna lie!
June 4, 2025 at 1:18 PM
Yours too please!

$10 on Pitu saying KKKG for her comfort rewatch and then getting lost praising that melodramatic magnificence so we never hear her ‘layered masterpieces’ or ‘you must watch this’ choices

How did Boney Kapoor manage to pollute Sridevi’s gene pool so badly that her offspring haven’t 1% of her charm or skill? He’s like the Deepwater Horizon of Indian cinema

I definitely want to check out The National Museum of Indian Cinema in Mumbai.
Karwaan Heritage have sporadic walking tours that look amazing (Payal Kapadia led a tour around Mumbai, they also had a Basu Chatterji walk).
I’ve never stayed at Sun N Sand but that’s also on my list.
Very jealous!

What are the best film experiences in India for Hindi cinema fans? It doesn’t seem to be as well designed & marketed for fans (as compared to the various studio tours and film tours that USA has)

Oh yes. Brilliant stuff and so glad to have SOMEONE actually take care of heritage films without trying to colourise or make it 3bloodyD. I think I shared this with you elsewhere but nice article:

Ha, ok. Maybe just if it’s not those two then. I seem to struggle with finding the older B&W films with subtitles online but maybe I need to sieve a bit deeper into YouTube

@asimburney.bsky.social @9e3k.bsky.social I had exactly this realisation as Khandaan were ranking Hrithik.

Jodhaa Akbar, Lakshya, Luck Bu Chance , War, ZNMD, K3G, Dhoom2 and yet I still don’t look for his next release in the way that I do for Alia, Aamir, Tabu, Ranbir, Vidya, Ranveer etc

Thank you for the push. It became so hard to find quality old films once my DVD player packed up but your podcast forced me to search again and I found a streaming subtitled Nayak print. Where possible, would you please consider including the links to where you streamed the films (esp w subtitles) 🙏🏽

Is it weird that I read my Letterboxd Wrapped nanogenre in Pitu’s voice

Just finished the pod and one of the Kangana Ranaut films that I quite enjoyed was Panga. It was made by Ashwini Iyer Tiwari who directed Nil Battey Sannata & Bareilly Ki Barfi and it’s a somewhat typical sports movie peppered with lovely feminist depictions of family, allies and purpose

💯. In general, there’s no one in Hindi cinema with significant allegations whose creative output I miss other than Vikas Bahl with Queen (thankfully he’s been horrendous since) and Kailash Kher (whose music formed a defining soundtrack to my mid and late 00s… the decade as opposed to my age range).
January 8, 2025 at 2:14 PM
I hate that I love this film because I haven’t been able to separate Vikas Bahl & Kangana Ranaut from their art

Oh I miss your cricket columns. Would’ve loved to read your take on the Border-Gavaskar series right now
