Using data on direct democracy, the paper proposes an alternative estimation strategy of the ideological positions of Swiss municipalities in the party competition space.

Using data from 28 countries between 1980 and 2021 I find that parties polarize during economic downturns. Further exploring the mechanisms, I show that they do so in reaction to changing voter priorities and grievances.
