This year's El nino is so big they've had to extend the y-axis to fit today's reading on the chart.

I've spent the last day or so trying to find information on possible mechanisms by which AI superintelligence could cause human extinction. How do they think it might happen? All the answers I've seen so far are very hand wavy on the detail

This should be being shouted from the rooftops! It should be at the heart of government policy and discussion the world over and yet... it is pretty much the only thing that matters from a long-term (medium term perhaps even short term) civilisation perspective.
The daily global average sea surface temperature has reached its highest level on record. On 22 August 2026, data from the #CopernicusClimate showed 21.1°C, exceeding the previous record set in March 2024.

Breaking News!
Code: Ludicrous! (Thanks @weatherprof.bsky.social )

The mean peak sea-surface temperature anomaly for region Nino 3.4 is now at 4.17°C above the 1850-1900 baseline.

Here is an updated 90% confidence graphic, with data through July 6th:

AI 10x is a fallacy, at least at a population level. For a population to support 10x increase in productivity within the tech sector, keeping a similar percentage of workforce fully employed, demand has to increase x10. Companies will achieve 10x individually but by reducing workforce dramatically.

This is a scary and very important graph. The grey line shows the highest sea surface temperature anomaly ever recorded in the Nino 3.4 region of the Pacific. The orange lines show the predicted anomaly for this year. The dark orange is the overall predicted anomaly. The blue is this year's anomaly.
What do you think about combining the measured values and the ECMWF forecast in one graph?

Your 'moment of doom' for Feb. 14, 2026 ~ For the rain it raineth every day.

"Warmer air can hold more moisture – about 7% more for every 1°C of warming. This means that when it rains, on average it rains harder. Bigger, heavier downpours become more common."

Code La Nina!!!

The method for computing the ENSO cycle (La Nina/El Nino) changed as of Feb. 2, 2026. NOAA is now using RONI, the Relative Oceanic Nino Index.

Even with all the recent record heat, since 2020 it's been mostly La Nina!

Very succinctly put.
"What the current U.S. administration is doing...is saying the quiet part out loud. As the natural resources that the modern world depends on become more and more scarce, countries will more and more resort to openly violent methods to secure access to those resources."

With 4 days of data to go, November, 2025, will likely end up as the third warmest November on record and third warmest November in the last 120,000+ years.

November will also mark the second consecutive month breaking 1.5°C over the 1850-1900 pre-industrial baseline.

Stay tuned!

The 400 richest Americans are now worth a record $6.6 trillion.

The entire bottom 50% of America is worth just $4.2 trillion.

Read that back.

When 400 people control more wealth than half a country’s population, we have a very serious problem.

This is extraordinary. This season is also not yet over.
What I meant to say was: “2 cat 5’s in back to back seasons.”
#Humberto is now a Cat 5!
It’s the first time in nearly a century with back to back seasons with Cat 5’s in the Atlantic.
We are seeing our warmer future unfold in real-time, IMO. 1/

Juan Brown says that with first officer being the pilot flying, the captain would have their right hand on the throttle up to rotation speed, then remove it. No one's hand should have been near the throttle at liftoff, as it's too late for an abort.

Hard to see how it could be accidental.
