checkout.session.completed doesn't mean you got paid. With SEPA Direct Debit it arrives as "unpaid", and the money comes days later in async_payment_succeeded. Check payment_status before you ship.

A webhook payload is the request body of one event. The event type isn't always in it: GitHub and Shopify send it in a header, Stripe and Slack in the body. Log only bodies and you lose it.

A webhook URL is the address a provider POSTs events to. Hiding it protects nothing, you verify signatures instead. A Slack or Discord webhook URL is the opposite: it carries a token, so treat it as a password.

Requests stay in memory on an EU server and are deleted after 30 minutes.

Shopify webhooks: 1 s to connect, 5 s to answer with a 2xx, and a 301 counts as a failure. Failed deliveries get 8 retries in 4 hours. Keep failing and Shopify removes the subscription.

Verify the HMAC, store, return 200, process later.

Webhook retry schedule for a two hour outage: 30 s, 2 min, 10 min, 1 h, 4 h, each delay with ±20% jitter.

Retry 408, 429, 5xx and timeouts, never a 400 or 404. After the last attempt, park the event in a dead letter queue and replay in bulk.

API, webhook ingest and the web app, checked every minute. Uptime for 24h, 7, 30 and 90 days.

Slow checks don't count as up. Days without data are never shown as 100%.

Stripe has four things called "key" or "secret": pk_, sk_, rk_, whsec_.

Only whsec_ verifies a webhook. Pass sk_live_ and every event fails with a signature error that never mentions the key.

Your webhook endpoint returned 200 OK.
The order never got processed.

Stripe saw the 200, so it won't retry. The customer paid and nothing happened on your side.

Most webhook bugs aren't in the signature check. They show up right after it 🧵
