FWIW I don’t think that AI is an existential threat, nor on track to become one. I do however think that the leaders of the biggest AI companies, AI’s strongest boosters, and some of the folks who are most adept at using it to exploit others are actively hastening along OTHER existential threats.

People working in AI industry posting nonsense on X are not “putting their careers on the line.” They’ve got a ton of $$ and will be fine. A lot of this discourse is just weird in-group social signaling explicitly *for* career advancement. Genuine concerns exist but good luck disentangling all that.

I did not have any of the critical ingredients for tachin, but I had about 5 cups of leftover cooked sushi rice and a rotisserie chicken I wanted to turn into something else. I followed the tachin steps with yoghurt, egg yolk, butter & garlic… layered it in a Dutch oven and… it worked!

Q: are laser pointers no longer used? Whole day of presentations and not one person used a laser pointer (and, for those in giant rooms, this was sometimes a hinderance as they tried to draw our attention to something). Can’t tell if this is a field thing, an age thing (I’m old), or coincidence.

When Einstein developed general relativity the closest thing to a practical application that could even be imagined at the time was a slightly more precise description of where to look for the planet Mercury in the sky, and yet now we’d all be literally lost without it.

GPS satellites move at 1/100000 the speed of light, causing their clocks to tick slower by 7 microseconds per day, and orbit at a height that makes their clocks tick faster by 45 microseconds per day. Two relativistic effects, both at the 1 part in 10 billion level, both essential for GPS accuracy 🧪

Aubrey. My dad wanted to name me Aubrey, but my mom won out with Kirsten, pronounced “Kerstin”. Wish my dad had succeeded, it would have spared me a lifetime of mispronunciations.
My grandmother tells the story all the time that she ALWAYS wanted a girl and to name her Tiffany, but she only had boys. Well, when I, the first grandchild, came along, it’s almost as if my parents had no choice. I’ve been named Tiffany for 60 years.

First time trying Nordic skating (i.e. wild ice skating) on a 4+ mile lake loop! It was a struggle going into the wind, but on the way back you’re a human sail and can really enjoy the view/experience.

Finding it hard to concentrate this morning. I’ve been collaborating with some folks at Brown regularly this year. I have a few friends in Sydney, and half of my family is Jewish. My heart is with all of these communities today.

Some folk I know were not appropriately horrified by the national research funding freeze. Wonder what they’ll make of this.
Speechless. Currently in the hospital as the Pediatric Infectious Disease Attending & access to vital info is limited. My duty to each child that I take care of is to have to most up to date information - in order to provide the best possible care. This is unacceptable
