A key takeaway: career progression is not only about individual merit. Institutions and research groups can foster leadership by creating opportunities, building confidence, encouraging ownership, and supporting mentoring toward independence.

@fuentemilla.bsky.social encouraged junior researchers to build leadership and independence early, rather than waiting for seniority. Researchers are often expected to show leadership before being given the chance to lead; seek opportunities and take initiative.

@luminetolivier.bsky.social reflected on how leadership is assessed in academia and how evaluation could be improved. He stressed the value of being present, active, and open to unexpected collaborations—often key in shaping academic careers.

@rosabanos.bsky.social highlighted the drop in women’s representation across academic career stages, despite Psychology being female-dominated at undergraduate level. Her advice: apply for funding early, including small grants, and stay active in collaborative networks.
