Another #Gannet image from last
weekend. This one definitely falls into the wildlife
portraiture category (the full-size version of this is 6000
px wide with fantastic detail). That killer's eye, that
finely-chiselled bill and that streamlined
fuselage....yep, I quite like Gannets!

I'm not alone is being a devotee of the Northern Gannet. It pulls me back to Bempton Cliffs, including running workshops for people who end up with the same regard for Gannets. After all, there aren't many large and elegant pelagic birds that you can view from as a little as 5-10m in the UK!

It's World Curlew Day tomorrow, so here are a few images of these fab birds from last week, taken on the moors above Swaledale. @curlewaction.bsky.social

Choices, choices...! Same Gannet from last month, 3 poses. A nicely-detailed classic avian image, an action-orientated gape shot and an aesthetically-pleasing composition. The wildlife photographer in me says 1 or 2, the artist in me says 3. Any preference? #gannets @rspbengland.bsky.social

A few images from an early morning foray up onto Grinton Moor yesterday. Unfortunately, the numbers of ground-nesting birds on the tops in this area seem to have declined in recent years. I'm only seeing a few curlew and lapwing over 2-3 hour walks these days. #yorkshiredales @yorkshiredales.org.uk

I've just been processing a bunch of images from 2 visits to Bempton Cliffs in the past few weeks (recc'ing for this year's workshops).
This serene image, imaginatively titled 'Out of the Blue', is from a morning of low, grey cloud with low light. Cool blue seemed to fit! @rspbengland.bsky.social

Another image from last week's Black Grouse lek that's taken a bit of processing, but I wanted to share this duel. Appalling light meant iso16000 and the wings are still blurred! @yorkshiredales.org.uk

Whoops! Now that my website platform (Format) supports Bluesky social icons and sharing, I've suddenly rediscovered the app. Apologies, folks, for such a naff reason for drifting away. To make up, here's a couple of images of a Black Grouse lek in North Yorkshire this week.

Those soft, layered, undulations seem quite rhythmic to me. So far, this is one of my favourite images from last week's unintentionally extended North Uist sessions, as it both abstracts, and suggests, the subject simultaneously (I hope!). #icmphotography #impressionism #nikonz7ii #scottishlandscape

An #icmphotography image I created last week on the Isle of Lewis. This felt like a special time and space - middle of the afternoon with an expansive beach, devoid of people, and approaching dark clouds. Purists might note some intentional compositional tension and resolution! #seascapes

Oh, the Hebrides! One of the best places in the UK to move from 50mph winds and lashing rain to a light breeze and watery sunshine in 5 minutes.... and back again just as quickly. A bit of long exposure #ICMPhotography from one of yesterday's respites on Great Bernera. #elementsmagazine #greatberner

A little series of #Puffin images taken at the weekend on the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast in the UK. It's a much bigger colony now than I remember from a decade ago, making it a great place to experience these busy birds during the breeding season. #naturephotography #birds #birdphoto

2025 seems to be dominated by preening types that deceive vulnerable and less powerful individuals. I'm talking about the Cuckoo😊. I saw 4 separate Cuckoos over the moors in 30 minutes on Saturday morning - a first - including these 2 that seem to court AND fight! #cuckoos @yorkshiredales.org.uk

I've just launched a new full-day photography workshop in the upper dales for bird photographers. Think Curlew, Lapwing, Wheatear, Red Grouse, etc. in the stunning scenery of the moors and valleys of Wensleydale & Swaledale. Just search Atkins on craftcourses.com #birdphotography #photoworkshops

'Shimmer'. Iridescent Lapwing. I guess this could be a #WednesdayWader even if it's from last Friday😀. Taken in unseasonably warm weather on Redmire Moor in North Yorkshire. #birds #britishbirds #wadingbirds @yorkshiredales.org.uk @nikoneurope.bsky.social

With the weather cooling but still fine, why not join me and a host of other excellent craftspeople at Tennants Garden Rooms in Leyburn tomorrow. It's their annual Spring Fair and only on for one day! #tennants #craftfairs #leyburn @yorkshiredales.org.uk

If any photographers out there are interested in witnessing a black grouse lek while staying within the conservation guidelines, let me know. Max 3 people with 500mm or longer lenses, my vehicle, pre-dawn meet in Leyburn, North Yorkshire. £60 pp. #blackgrouse #birdphotography #yorkshiredales

#FlyDay A Ring Ouzel from last week's trot across Grinton Moor in the Yorkshire Dales.

3 bird-in-flight images from yesterday's wander across Grinton & Redmire Moors (twixt Swaledale and Wensleydale). Ring Ouzel, Golden Plover and Red Grouse. Particularly pleased to get the GPs, as there aren't too many about. #birds #BIF #birdphotography #nikon @yorkshiredales.org.uk

Here's another image of the lekking Black Grouse from a couple of days ago. I was pretty happy with this action shot, as it was 6.15am and pretty murky, with ISO6400 needed for a vaguely acceptable shutter speed! As ever, a distance shot from the car. @yorkshiredales.org.uk #wharfedale #birdphoto

One of my ICM (intentional camera movement) images was chosen for the 2025 edition of Aire Place Studios' Print It! exhibition and book, which was nice (sorry for that fast Show reference!). #icmphotography #seascapes
