There is something unsettling about Zalmoxis even before we begin trying to understand who—or what—he was. He appears at the edge of recorded European history almost as if he had stepped out of a story that had already been told for centuries before anyone thought to write it down. A god to some, a man to others, perhaps a priest, perhaps a reformer, perhaps the distant memory of a real person whose identity dissolved into religion, he belonged to the world of the Getae north of the lower Danube, yet nearly everything we know about him was preserved by outsiders.
