Ratko Mladic died last week in prison, convicted of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity for murdering 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica, Bosnia. Burial - in Serbia “with highest military and state honors.” Serbia denies genocide, glorifies this war criminal; survivors are enraged.

At least 4,000 Greenlandic women and girls had an IUD coil implanted by 1970, half the Greenlandic females of childbearing age. They were fitted with these birth-control devices without knowledge or consent. Denmark’s PM apologized – empty words, no compensation. Lawsuit has been filed by 143 women.

News about the Iran war is all about the Hormuz Strait – but Christians, Baha’i face terrible violence. Afghanistan is mostly Muslim. Taliban is purging religious minorities: Hindus, Sikhs, and Jews have left since the 1990s, and the 10% Shi’a minority is under severe pressure. Every person counts.

On August 26, 1920, many women in the US got the right to vote. Not Native women. And most African American women were turned away at polls for nearly 50 more years. But the 19th Amendment, certified that day, was a step towards women’s equality.

Turkey issued an international arrest warrant, an Interpol red notice, on August 21 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He is accused of genocide and crimes against humanity for the May 2026 interception of a ship with 430 activists going to Gaza with humanitarian aid.

The federal government paid $40m for foreign countries to accept deportees from the US who can’t go back to their home countries. Third-country deportation deals have been made with over 30 countries including the Dominican Republic, South Sudan, Eswatini, Cameroon, Rwanda, and Liberia.

Temporary Protected Status, TPS: people from war-torn countries can live safely in the US while they file for permanent status. TPS has been withdrawn from 700,000 people in the US. They will be sent back to Ethiopia, Haiti, Somalia, Ukraine, and other places of fighting and probable death.

ICE arrested 43,138 people in June 2026 and 51,000 people in July 2026. The goal for June plus July: 122,000. Total of 94,138.

70.6% of those arrested have no criminal convictions. Of those with convictions, they include even minor traffic violations.

47% - Netanyahu guilty of war crimes in Gaza.
24% - Not guilty.
49% - The US should arrest Netanyahu if he’s here, send him to the International Criminal Court.
27% - Don’t arrest him.
68% of Dems: guilty; arrest him.
24% of Reps: guilty, arrest him.

Hotel Lutetia is the main character in Hotel Exile: Paris in the Shadow of War: Before the war, German refugees met there, warning against fascism. In wartime it housed Germany’s secret police. After 1945, the living skeletons rescued from concentration camps were cared for. An amazing book.

In 2020, the US was declared measles-free, with the deadly disease eradicated. Now, measles cases are at levels not seen in a quarter of a century. People are dying from preventable deaths. There are no lifeguards on duty.

What an irony! The Israeli government announced recognition of the 1915-1923 genocide of a million Armenians by Turkey. Then – Turkey’s ally Azerbaijan lobbied hard against this decision – and Israel back-pedaled – nope, no genocide after all. Turkey has denied this genocide for over 100 years.

There are genocide memorials in Cambodia, Rwanda, Germany, France, US – all over the world. But how do we ensure that younger generations remain engaged with a history they did not experience themselves? Memorial sites must become places for education and learning, teaching peace and acceptance.

German prosecutors arrested a Rwandan man in Germany accused of murdering at least 25 people during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, drawing up death lists, and inciting people to commit genocide. Germany has prosecuted several Rwandans using universal jurisdiction.

Last week, 3 international organizations filed a criminal complaint against Nitro-Chem, a company in Poland and the largest producer of TNT in NATO, for crimes against Palestinians in Gaza. There are increasing efforts to hold businesses accountable for violence, a legacy of the Nuremberg trials.

DR Congo filed a case against Rwanda at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for breaching international treaties. Congo wants accountability for alleged violations of conventions covering genocide prevention, racial discrimination, women's rights, and torture. Rwanda backs rebels in Congo.

The UN Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Palestine says Israel is committing genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity in targeting children in Gaza, West Bank. COI urges an end to attacks and child-responsive justice. 20,100 Palestinian children killed, 44,000 wounded since Hamas 2023 attack.

Turkey lashed out against Israel for labeling the atrocities against Armenians in WWI as ‘genocide.’ Turkey’s denial has gone on for a century despite acknowledgment from scholars, nations, historical documents. But acknowledging means reparations and culpability. Turkey – time to admit the past.

Wednesday, June 24 - Raphael Lemkin’s birthday. He coined the word ‘genocide,’ authored the Genocide Convention, and lobbied for ratification at the UN. He changed our concept of commitment, responsibility to our human family. Race, religion, ethnicity, and national origin cannot be reasons to kill.

In Idaho, legislators tried to make it a FELONY for a trans person to use the bathroom corresponding to their sexual identity. A FELONY. This is like Nazi Germany banning Jews from walking on the sidewalk.

A lawsuit in Australia alleges that UK King Charles, also Australia’s king, is perpetrating genocide of Aboriginal people through systemic discrimination, with worse health, higher imprisonment, higher unemployment, lower education. The British colonized Australia in 1788, seized Indigenous land.
