2 areas of interest active this morning, one each respectively in the Pacific/Atlantic. The North Atlantic one now has a medium chance of formation.
A pretty substantial flooding event has begun materializing in Arizona, partially from the influence of a tropical disturbance just south of the area. Main area of concern currently is just NE of Pheonix.

The El Niño has started breaching into the +3°C anomaly range, according to CRW data. Relative anomalies are around +2.5°C.

A Slight Risk of severe weather is active today around the Iowa/Nebraska border. A couple tornadoes and large hail/wind damage possible this evening.

Area of interest remains active in the open atlantic this morning, with a 30% chance of tropical development.
September 14, 2026 at 1:01 PM
The atlantic has also gone a record amount of time into the hurricane season without a hurricane in the Satellite Era! An area of interest has been highlighted by NHC this morning though. Mainly has support from Google's FNV3 ensemble.

Some notable severe weather is possible tomorrow on Monday around the Omaha area, into Iowa. This includes the potentially a strong tornado or two, as well as scattered large hail and wind damage.

A line of severe storms has materialized tonight in Minnesota, with a threat of wind damage and large hail, as well as embedded tornadoes; includes this ongoing tornado right now near Stevens.

As for something broader, our El Niño largely stagnated in intensity in August, but the pace has picked up again before it peaks around Oct/Nov. Relative anomalies are right with the strongest Nino’s, and Raw anomalies have ran away from everything else.
September 10, 2026 at 1:41 PM
Severe weather starting to make a bit of a resurgence late this week. Scattered wind damage and a couple tornadoes are mainly possible in Minnesota tomorrow, and an extended range area has been highlighted for Monday.

Elsewhere, Tropical Storm Marie currently lies off the coast of Baja California and has contributed to some rich moisture off the coast of SoCal. This also means the area will see very high heat indexes today and tomorrow!

Hurricane Lowell passed very close to Niihau and Kauai overnight and is now moving away from the islands. A flash flood warning remains in effect for all of Kauai.
September 8, 2026 at 1:22 PM
UPDATE: The core of Hurricane Lowell has come into radar view. A hurricane hunter also has found stronger winds within #Lowell, thanks to the ongoing jet interaction. This will likely lead to intense wind gusts as closest pass/landfall occurs to Kauai.
September 7, 2026 at 11:52 PM
There has also already been onsetting flash flooding in Kauai from the outer bands of Lowell; this will only worsen as more rain falls, and the mountainous terrain will likely favor mudslides occurring as well.
September 7, 2026 at 9:28 PM
Hurricane Lowell continues to quickly move northeast today, and now could possibly landfall on Kauai or Niihau. Regardless, destructive wind gusts >100mph, storm surge, and rainfall >1ft are coming over the next 12-24h!
September 7, 2026 at 9:01 PM
Hurricane Lowell has started accelerating to the northeast today toward the Hawaiian islands of Niihau and Kauai, which are both now under hurricane warnings because of continued shifts east. It also now has a bloated wind field, thanks to a jet interaction.
September 7, 2026 at 1:31 PM
UPDATE: Niihau and Kauai have also been given a hurricane watch, since the track of Lowell has nudged eastward again.

NASCAR is set to open The 10-race Chase at Darlington this evening, but the track may be subject to strong storms around the race's start time. It should be good to go after that though, with some lighter rain possible later on.
September 6, 2026 at 5:46 PM
Hurricane Lowell has started to turn north as it struggles with a persistent eyewall replacement cycle, but it remains a powerful major hurricane; it has also grown in size as well. A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Kauai ahead of Lowell's pass near the island.
September 6, 2026 at 3:08 PM
Hurricane hunters entered Lowell soon after an eyewall replacement finished and have found it at High end Cat 4 intensity once again. Lowell is still most likely to pass east of the hawaiian islands, but they should closely monitor it's progression.
September 4, 2026 at 6:13 PM
Things trending concerning today regarding Lowell's track over the next few days; Google's FNV3 ensemble has continued the eastern shift. HWRF also now takes it through the hawaiian islands outright. The islands should start closely monitoring Lowell's progression.
September 3, 2026 at 6:24 PM
Update: the plane appears to have hit the storm past peak. The satellite presentation has degraded, and data supports nothing higher than mid-range C4.
September 2, 2026 at 11:46 PM
Hurricane Lowell has been traversing the Central Pacific today and has just been upgraded to a Category 5 hurricane; the storm has had persistent eyewall lightning. A NOAA research mission will provide more information this evening.

Widespread wind damage and a couple tornadoes are possible in the northeast today.

While Edouard was landfalling, the Pacific has been putting on a show today, with what is about to be 3 simultaneous hurricanes spread across the East/Central Pacific, most notably Karina (Center) and Lowell (left), which just became a major hurricane.
