I’m overwhelmed today, but I want to circle back in a while to share the links to everyone & everything I cited.

More soon.

I ain’t a map guy, but this is incredible and, now, so obvious. Hats off to the parent of this idea.
Loads of people liked our sand tray map pic from Armageddon Auckland—so today we filmed an actual play video so you can see it in action. The players are archeologists exploring an Egyptian tomb. The map gets slowly revealed by brushing the sand away... Such a fun way to introduce Call of Cthulhu!

This is what teaching has taught me about games, and vice versa.
If you teach a class regularly, you learn how different “the same” course can be due to the specific mix of students—there’s only so much you can directly control, even with thoughtful design

I always enjoy teaching BookLab, but last year’s class was quiet—this spring they are wonderfully chatty

The Framework episodes from Agents of SHIELD are feeling uncomfortably close to real life these days. Glad to still have resonant voices saying clearly what we know to be true.

Excellent short summary of the last decade plus of our political landscape.
meanwhile the critique of popularism is "your own base will hate you for betraying them, people who really believe in this stuff will go full fash rather than support your half measures, and the waverers will take your capitulation as proof the fash are right"

bearing out pretty well so far

As much as I tend to lean on just defending deep dish, this is the actual correct take.
as a (virtually) lifelong NYer here's the deal: all pizza is good. deep dish rules. detroit pizza is goated. lunch lady cafeteria pizza was a joy. the only dubious pizza culture is california because it tries too hard but even (most) california pizza is fantastic. grow up
again chicagoans need to grow a set and stand up for themselves. deep dish is the superior pizza, you don’t have to do this cowardly whimpering “oh actually we like thin crust that’s cut into squares for no damned reason” thing. this is why the rancid packers have been clowning you for 30 years

deep dish is the thing you deliberately go out for when you want to eat something delicious. tavern is what the office orders for morale-enhancing lunch.

To no one’s surprise, the secret history of RPGs has always been women innovating ideas that men “discover” anywhere from 10-400 years later! Fantastic thread from one of the hobby’s coolest academics.
Indeed. The purchaseable *product* we call the TTRPG begins in the 1970s with Western Gunfight, Chainmail, and D&D.

Yet role-playing "parlor games," simulations, and similar are centuries old and draw from a well that resembles all the positive stuff about D&D.

Parlor games were feminized...

Wife: How’s the K-pop demon hunting?

Me, pausing: It’s not about hunting demons! It’s about losing the unique light you shine into the world because of the shame you carry when the person who was supposed to love you most couldn’t love all of you! It’s about turning fear into POWER!
