Whatever you think this is, it's not.

Communist. Sound-maker, poem-writer, nonsense-poster. Programmer and very sorry about it. Mostly benign. Trust me, I'm a doctor.

You cannot read this post in a courtroom. You can read it aloud to your family and friends. You can print it out on leaflets and pass out the leaflets on the steps of the courthouse.

It seems like the longer I've followed someone, the more likely it is they were left behind??? What the heck :{ :{ :{

Where does this leave us? Probably at the beginning of another lengthy string of posts. I think the short version is what I'm literally always saying: Treat your desires with healthy suspicion. They're often not only yours.

But do not mistake: (this) technology has only accelerated (the already and continuing occurrence of, by this and other technologies) eclipsing art with spectacle, and spectacle serves capitalism.

Super Duper Intelligence that purports to provide "infinite personalized music" does so through the same basic cycle of decontextualization and recomposition, only "at scale" via mathematics and environmental destruction.

The predominant influence in the US (and likely many [most?] other places) is mass culture, which represents existing materials to us in mediated forms. It is cyclical, both temporally in how a past "fad" or "style" returns and in how disparate sources are recomposed.

Furthermore, "personalization" is both a myth and already forced upon us. Your tastes did not spring from the void fully-formed with no outside influence. Changing them intentionally is possible, in my opinion, but even then, you remain influenced.

The opportunity for reflection upon and analysis of music, its makers, yourself is part of the beauty of experience, and doing this well requires repetition.

Maybe we also pretend this doesn't happen. Okay. How can you meaningfully engage with it all? How can you remember a piece? Discover subtleties? Draw connections?

Perhaps there's something to be said for hearing less music more recurrently.

You know the kind of thing: an ever-present sound you've learned to tune out; the feeling of air that you've learned not to perceive as gases and particles constantly bombarding you; etc. It's maybe hard to recognize the line, but at some point you've crossed from aesthesis into anaesthesis.
