The UNET Fellows have studied displacement, education, mental health, resilience, social cohesion & much more. In the process, we learned that research itself needs care: care for the people we study, care for those doing the research, and care in how knowledge about Ukraine is produced and shared.

As we launch UNET Times, Ukraine is facing relentless attacks. Events such as these make one of the questions at the heart of UNET Times immediate: How can we produce knowledge about Ukraine and the war it is facing without losing sight of the human beings living through it?

UNET was launched by ZOiS in 2022 in response to the threat posed to Ukrainian academic life by Russia's war, offering both Berlin- and Ukraine-based fellowships, offering stipends, mentorship, networking, support with publications and research communication, with funding from BMFTR.

We stand in solidarity with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and are committed to securing and strengthening long-term cooperation with colleagues from and within Ukraine. Ukrainian science remains an integral part of Ukrainian democracy and the European research area at all times.

The Academy is a beacon of Ukrainian science and also the academic home of several fellows in our Ukraine Research Network@ZOiS (UNET) project. It is with great sadness that we view these attacks, which painfully highlight what this war is really about: the destruction of Ukrainian sovereignty.
