Meta released an open-source AI model that runs on personal computers, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg published a roughly 6,500-word essay urging looser U.S. AI regulation to compete with China.

Axios: Warsh has told associates that before taking office, he built AI bots that ingested the collected works of economists Milton Friedman and James Tobin. He then turned to them for their insights on contemporary economic questions. [Who needs task forces?]

Zuckerberg's philosophy in a nutshell: widely distributed superintelligence will make society safer and more prosperous for everyone.

On brand, he’s largely silent on how to overcome inequalities in compute, capital, infrastructure, influence, and control.

Biggest problem is that no one can build AI agents that can do what he dreams of with current AI technology (Zuck is living in SciFi), but also a huge problem is: "[Zuck] does not consider that, even if everyone were to have an AI agent, perhaps not everyone would use these AI agents for good."

Meta is taking a stance on one of the biggest debates shaping the future of artificial intelligence: Should AI models be open for anyone to tinker with and modify, or should they be tightly controlled by the companies making them? https://cnn.it/4wmEmbt

Yu & Wang on the Regulation of AI’s Environmental Externalities
Chen Yu (City University of Hong Kong) and Heng Wang (Singapore Management University, Yong Pung How School of Law) have posted The Misaligned Regulation of AI’s Environmental Externalities: A Tale of Three Intersecting Regimes on SSRN. Here is the abstract: The global expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) has driven massive cross-border investment in capital-intensive AI ecosystems. While AI can advance environmental sustainability, it also carries severe environmental externalities, particularly surging energy and water consumption, increased carbon emissions, and mounting e-waste.

I wrote about a stricter AI use policy we’ve developed at BMJ for some article types. I expect authors to pushback against our reasoning & guardrails to protect scholarship in our journal.
But a better argument to encourage less rampant AI use in writing is yours. Brilliant. I’ll be sharing it.
