Mette-Marit, the new Queen: a rebellious past and several controversies

Harald V's death ends more than three decades of reign and opens a new chapter for the Norwegian monarchy. His son, Haakon, has inherited the crown, and with him Mette-Marit becomes queen consort of Norway, completing a story that began far from the palaces and that 25 years ago seemed hard to imagine. The new queen joined the royal family in 2001 when she married the then crown prince. Her past, distant from aristocratic circles, made that wedding one of the most controversial events in contemporary Norwegian royalty. Mette-Marit then had to face public opinion questioning her suitability to become crown princess and openly explain some episodes of her youth. In addition to health difficulties she has faced in recent years and the controversy over her relationship with Jeffrey Epstein adds to it.
