The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

AI isn't just a massive safety risk.

With AI companies propping up the entire stock market, it could be the catalyst for the next economic crash.

The frontier of artificial intelligence is advancing at an alarming speed. Over the weekend, industry leaders voiced support for an idea that the American people and many AI researchers in their own labs have been calling for: We must responsibly slow the pace of frontier AI development.

Why would Trump be so opposed to regulating AI — even in the face of growing public concern, even with midterm elections just around the corner?

In thisa piece for @thenewworldmag.bsky.social I express the wish for a better level of public discourse around AI that doesn't leave us hanging on every word of the alleged tech gurus.

Apocalyptic AI fantasies are a stupid, annoying distraction from its real problems
The people who work in AI are not gurus and most of their predictions have been wrong. Working in the industry makes them less reliable commentators, not more

This conversation with @naomiaklein.bsky.social and @astra.bsky.social couldn't be more timely. With the AI industry talking about *its own products' potential to cause human extinction* we drill into who might still want to build such technology, and why.

Hint: it's in the title of their new book.

AI doom or not, something has shifted with AI recently. The guardrails that kept AI sitting in a chatbox are gone, the models are better, there's more compute.

AI agents are everywhere. They are annoying as hell. IMO the situation is going to get much worse

With Trump unleashing insane tirades against regulating AI, Obama just urged Dems to adopt a comprehensive position on it, warning that failure to act now will be "dangerous."

Trump's malevolence has given Dems a big opening. They should seize on it. 1/

The Real Reason Obama’s Harsh Warning to Dems About AI Is So Unnerving
Most Democrats have more or less the right position on AI. But their arguments are way too narrow to dramatize the real stakes. They should aim higher.

Confident predictions about what AI will achieve, what threat it poses, & when have circulated since at least the 1950s. But how well are these predictions made? This is what @floridi.bsky.social & @claudionovelli.bsky.social & I set out to examine here: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....
