You can read a lot of this as a pretty simple strategy: build power so you can constrain the US now, deal with problems like Russia that Trump won’t, survive if the US elects more Trumps, and have a good position to negotiate with an agreeably rational possible future US

Trump doesn't need to be a direct Russian asset as per the Krasnov narrative. He's so stupid that does it all on his own with a nudge here and there from Moscow at arm's length.
