one thing worth saying here specifically: there's lots that AI can't (yet) do and there's a lot of money riding on selling a particular narrative about its future capabilities. but the existential risk of AI is not only not mere hype but it is already a present tense problem

There's a lot to like in this NYT editorial on the need for a new agency to regulate AI, using the analogy of the Atomic Energy Commission. But let's not repeat the mistakes of that time -- combining promotion and regulation, appointing only boosters and keeping skeptics out with strict secrecy...

Apparently, the US admin is listening! "[per NYT] Trump is most concerned about economic growth, with AI being virtually the only sector driving the US economy. He reportedly fears the #AIBubble could burst, triggering a financial crisis [plunging] US into recession."

whether AI is an existential threat "in and of itself" as opposed to how it interacts with existing problems is not really my concern

'Europe’s dilemma over AI was rendered in stark terms this week. The head of the continent’s central bank, Christine Lagarde, said Europeans have two options: shun the technology and lose out on growth; or embrace it and become dependent on tools developed by the US and China.'

It seems like a lot of the loudest voices about AI existential risk absolutely love LLMs and may have cooked their brains a little bit. That doesn't mean they're wrong about AI being dangerous, but it certainly affects what actual harms they care about and what solutions they will to accept.

This is why you don’t want a monarchy or strongman regime. In a democracy with the rule of law, one weirdo descending into AI madness can be managed. But if you create a personalist regime with only one decider, and he goes mad…well what were you expecting? You invested everything in him. Well done.
