Oh and there’s a nonzero chance they were programmed to do this to push the issue of the government bringing in AI development in order to help mediate their giant financial problems and gain more power and control. Cool stuff, really. Not at all problematic.

Fair enough. All I want is for 'AI alignment' to be understood as a rule of law / execution problem that we at least in principle know how to deal with, not the combination of campfire horror story, philosophical head scratcher and portrait of the technological sublime we are currently being pitched

AI is being used to...

-Facilitate online scams
-Process health insurance claims, leading to wrongful denials
-Price gouge customers via surveillance pricing
-Set higher car insurance premiums using personal data

The dangers of AI aren’t in some far-off future.

They're already here.

Listen, I just think it's weird that the same people who are saying they're worried that AI is going to wipe out humanity are also eager for military contracts that will give AI control of weapons.

Apparently kids have decided that 'AI' is a word that means bullshit.

Which is funny because that is also what many academics think.

An individual in Canada used ChatGPT for eight months to plan one of the country’s worst mass shootings.

Yet, if you listen to politicians and media, the real threat of AI is a fantastical scenario where it might wipe out humans in ten years. They need to stop getting fooled by tech deceivers.
The media has the AI threat all wrong
Generative AI is harming people today. We don’t need to waste time fantasizing about science fictional scenarios.

A simple way to improve AI safety is to enforce the law. If Sam Altman knows that he will be treated like a drunk driver after an accident if his AI causes serious damage, he will be much more careful deanbaker22.substack.com/p/sam-altman...

Forget grandiose talk of curing cancer - this is what AI is actually doing to healthcare.

In the words of one cardiologist: “it’s bots fighting bots, agents fighting agents, a horrible dystopic future nobody wants to live in.”

People are becoming worried that the U.S. has no laws that are effective against AI-driven data breaches, but wait until they learn that the U.S. also has no laws that are effective against human-driven data breaches.
