I’ve argued that this El Niño event is likely the most deviant climate event we’ve witnessed. A magnitude I don’t think any climate scientist could have foreseen a year ago, even given our rapidly warming climate. Perhaps a Grey Swan event?

This is pretty wild... the average global sea surface temperature (outside of the polar regions) is still above 70°F (21.1°C) through the end of September. This is significantly above the prior record.

We'll cover this in our October climate briefing: climatecentral-org.zoom.us/webinar/regi... 🌊

Summer 2026 was hottest on record in Western Europe, yet still no political awakening - According to the European Copernicus service, the average summer temperature reached 21.7°C, well above average. Yet European Union member states continued to invest in fossil fuels.

September 2026 was the second warmest September on record globally according to ERA5 reanalysis. As @khaustein.bsky.social noted yesterday, a cool September in Antarctica kept this September from breaking the record set in 2023.
