Lithuania temporarily closes airspace over Vilnius Airport due to possible drone presence

The incident prompted NATO fighter jets to intervene in the Baltic region. Two Spanish fighter jets were activated in Romania after a drone was detected near the border with Ukraine. The possible presence of an unknown drone on Saturday over Lithuania led to the temporary closure of Vilnius airport's airspace, the Lithuanian capital, in an incident that prompted NATO fighter jets deployed in the Baltic region to respond. According to Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the National Crisis Management Centre (NKMC) of Lithuania, in statements to the public broadcaster LRT, 'the object has not yet been fully identified' and fighter jets were deployed 'carrying out that task.' Vitkauskas noted that after being detected the object disappeared from the surveillance zone and ceased to pose a threat, though it is still being searched. 'If it fell, if it was a drone, it will have to be found. But it does not necessarily have to have been one.'
