The scandal over the detention of his former boss shakes Germany's intelligence services: "It's a stab in the heart"

The accusations against August Hanning for using intelligence information for private clients add to other troubling espionage scandals in Germany. Germany detains a former head of its intelligence services on suspicion of espionage. The former head of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), August Hanning, criticized Germany's own intelligence services at one time, calling them "vegetarians" among lurking carnivores, and demanded greater powers to safeguard the country's security in a hostile world. Described often as the "godfather" of the security architecture of Germany in the 21st century, Hanning is now accused of alleged espionage constituting high treason and of handing state secrets to a foreign power in what is considered one of the gravest intelligence leaks of the postwar period. If true, Hanning could have irreparably damaged Germany's cooperation on global security, while exposing serious internal vulnerabilities, in a story that seems straight out of the unbelievable.
