Who Governs the Church When the Pope Goes into Surgery?

The Pope can enter an operating room without anyone taking his place at the head of the Church. There is no vice pope who temporarily assumes his powers, nor a regent who receives his powers while he remains anesthetized, or incapacitated by postoperative medications. The admission this Tuesday of Leo XIV to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital for an operation to remove a pulmonary nodule rekindles the question that the hospitalizations of his predecessors already raised: who governs the Church when the Pope is hospitalized? The answer requires two clarifications. First, to distinguish between the concept of sede impedita and sede vacante. Second, clearly regulated by the constitution Universi dominici gregis, it does not apply here because it only activates when the see becomes totally vacant due to the death or resignation of a Pope. Hospitalization by itself does not imply a sede impedita, but as a general criterion it would govern the principle of nihil innovetur.
