A New World of Lung Cancer Therapy Awaits Pope Leo
Lung cancer is still a leading cause of cancer death, but that rate is half what it was in the 1990s, partly because newly developed treatments are working.

Cheerful final para! 😱

"Leo’s predecessor, Francis, spent more than five weeks in the hospital, being treated for bronchitis, which developed into bilateral pneumonia. He died at home in Casa Santa Marta in Vatican City on 21 April 2025, just under a month after being discharged."

Prayers for Pope Leo 🙏🏽

The first American pope underwent surgery today at Gemelli Hospital in Rome to remove a cancerous growth from his right lung.

Surgeons removed the entire lower lobe of his right lung. The 90-minute procedure was successful, with no complications.

Dear friends: Pope Leo needs all our prayers, as he now faces treatment for lung cancer. Let me suggest that we ask Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Bernadette to intercede for him, as well as for his doctors, nurses and caregivers, so that he might be quickly restored to full health.

Good point. I wonder if there's a family propensity for cancer. Their mother, Mildred, died of cancer at 77.

Lung cancer remains far too common. Wishing Pope Leo a full recovery. His experience is a reminder to know your risk, understand your family history, and get screened if eligible.

Early detection saves lives.
