Imagine if hundreds of people died in hurricane or floods smashing through Europe

Heatwaves have already killed that many ppl. They are a silent killer in that they dont generate outrage or fear.

Hope this by @economist.com helps save lives as Europeans wake up to danger bsky.app/profile/eate...

🥵 Europe has been affected by a terrible heatwave, with impacts across the continent & record-breaking temperatures in many countries. The @ipcc.bsky.social #AR6 conclusions show that that heat extremes have become more intense & more frequent across the world due to human-induced climate change.

With heat waves shattering temperature records across the globe, leading to needless deaths, let me just say that history will not look fondly on those who put fossil fuel profits above saving the planet.

Globally, 84% of the heatwave days people were exposed to in 2020-24 would not have occurred without climate change.

The rate of deaths associated with heat exposure increased by 23% from the 1990s, reaching 546,000 deaths annually.

Look where people are dying.

Human-caused climate change is increasing the risk of hotter temperatures, including these dangerous heat waves. Watch the entire distribution shift to the right.

I'm afraid these headlines about record heat are only going to become more common. 🌡️

For those mentioning that some people "enjoy" that weather, it should not be forgotten that heatwaves lead to numerous deaths & that heat deaths can already be attributed to human-induced climate change, also in Switzerland & Europe:

Europe's record-breaking heat wave is a public health emergency.

🇫🇷 France estimates 1,000 excess deaths in just 3 days, with daily deaths surging from 900–1,000 to 1,400+. 85% of victims were aged 65+.

This event is ~200× more likely than it was 20 years ago.

In any sane, political climate, this sort of thing should lead to mea culpas by anyone who's been arguing that the effects of climate change have been overstated, and emergency summits by leaders looking for ways to avoid things getting even worse

The air conditioning moralism is a sideshow. Europe didn’t use to face these conditions. They are new. Of course it takes time and money to realize it’s not a fluke and start to rebuild a whole country. But it’s imperative, people are dying.
