As we kick off the Round of 32, I give you what these matchups are really about:

1. Canada 🇨🇦 vs. South Africa 🇿🇦 - Battle of the Commonwealth nations

2. Brazil 🇧🇷 vs. Japan 🇯🇵 - Battle of the Portuguese Jesuit "colonies"

3. Germany 🇩🇪 vs. Paraguay 🇵🇾 - Battle of *chuckles nervously*

Usually Europe and Latin America dominate the World Cup in football. Out of 32 advancing countries, 13 are European and 8 American, while Africa has done far better than previously with 9 countries advancing. The remaining 2 are Japan and Australia.

this is how I feel about all of CAF but especially Ivory Coast and I hope they beat Norway to make this clear to all
I’m not sure which game it followed, but at one point, Thierry Henry just said “if you’re not watching African football, that’s on you.” Like, no, I’m actually NOT shocked that all these teams are going through bc I’ve seen them before with my eyes?

Incredible goal by Canada's Stephen Eustáquio🇨🇦, from Leamington, Ontario. If you want to do something legendary, score for your country in the last minutes of the elimination round of #FIFAWorldCup 2026. Thrilling!

Truly a case of the "thrill of victory and the agony of defeat,” to quote the old ABC show (Wide World of Support).
Canada just secured a historic World Cup knockout stage win with a dramatic 92nd-minute goal.
Very hard luck to South Africa which played its heart out.

This is just so wonderful. “Africa had a historic 10 nations qualify for the 2026 World Cup. After Congo's 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan and Algeria's stunning 3-3 draw against Austria on Saturday night, nine are headed to the knockout stage.

The previous record was two.” #WorldCup

Almost had it there!
Rooting for a goal by Jonathan David for #Canada, which we can then double count towards Haiti's goal tally for the tournament

Canada is going to need more control of the ball and of their decision-making to be in with any chance against either the Netherlands or Morocco.

I hope we see Larin and Ahmed…..

Yesterday it was Canada, and today it's Brazil. A very late game-winning goal earns the team a place in the round of 16.
Just as it did for South Africa yesterday, my heart goes out to the team knocked out -- Japan.
It’s heartbreaking to see an underdog play with that much heart and still lose.
