Gibraltar, Spain abolish passport controls

Gibraltar and La Línea leaders removed the century-old Verja at the Spain–Gibraltar border at midnight on 15 July 2026, ending passport controls after a provisional EU–UK treaty.

This now puts Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory under British sovereignty, in the Schengen area for the free movement of people.
It also has a Customs Union with the European Union.
