Just reached 290,000 followers here on Bluesky, and, well: Wow. Thank you for being part of my experience here. To celebrate this really cool milestone, I've donated to Black Girls Do STEM, because we need diversity in STEM fields more than ever these days. Onward!

Microbiologist & stem-cell researcher Dr. Ann Tsukamoto co-patented a process to isolate human hematopoietic stem cells, 1991.

Her work laid the literal groundwork for modern regenerative medicine and cancer treatment. She was born #OTD in 1952.

As someone in a STEM discipline, I really abhor the kind of messaging that Mark describes. The messengers aren’t people who actually care about STEM. It’s really a shorthand for “do something practical, focus on your relation to the labor market”.
👇🎯 If you send kids the message that the only majors that are good are business & STEM from the time they’re in middle school, & then you don’t find the humanities & social sciences at the college level, it all becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy & that was clearly the point in the first place.
Can I just add that Drew’s excellent point here is why the entire discourse about declining humanities majors is so ridiculous and makes me want to scream every time I encounter it.

The “brain drain” will be a primarily domestic phenomenon, w/ STEM-trained people moving into non-STEM occupations.

There are not remotely enough STEM jobs abroad for our *millions* scientists, and even if there were, moving is hard, expensive & dependent on multiple intersecting privileges.

STEM Bros Take a Humanities Course Challenge
This is what I think of as a specific kind of ignorance that heavily affects young white guys who work in tech. It says “i don’t know about this, so I assume no one else does either.” It’s new to them, so it must be new to everybody!

Johnson: "It's true that in previous shutdowns, many or most furloughed employees have been paid for the time they were furloughed, but there is new legal analysis - I don't know the details, I just saw a headline - but there are some legal analysts saying that might not be appropriate or necessary"

It's tragically appropriate that we spent a whole generation telling students that the humanities were moribund, and they should all study STEM, only for the greatest innovations in STEM to prove why the humanities were so essential all along.
