biofuels make no sense whatsoever

Taxing wind and solar, while subsidizing fossil fuels and biofuels. Get it yet?

NEW: Biofuels globally emit more than the fossil fuels they replace, our latest study shows.

The first-of-a-kind study looks at global biofuels production today and the potential impacts of government biofuel targets.

Illinois has all the pieces to be a world-class hub for biofuels.

We’re the nation’s #1 soybean producer, #2 corn producer, and responsible for 90% of US oilseed production.

Alongside our manufacturing ecosystem, busiest aviation hubs in the world, and a growing workforce.

Biofuels are a policy failure.

Biofuels aren’t worth it
New research from my colleagues out today looking at the environmental and social impacts of food crop-based biofuels in the US, where we now use >30% of the corn supply and >40% of the soybean oil supply (on tens of millions of acres of prime cropland) to produce only ~6% of US transport fuel. 🧪
Increased Biofuel Production in the US Midwest May Harm Farmers and the Climate
The expansion of biofuel production as an alternative fuel source not only raises questions about sustainability, but about economic inequities among Midwestern small farmers.

Biofuels are absurdly inefficient compared to electric vehicles.

A great piece in @ourworldindata.org

ourworldindata.org/biofuel-land...
Putting solar panels on land used for biofuels would produce enough electricity for all cars and trucks to go electric
The world dedicates a Poland-sized area of land to liquid biofuels. Is there a more efficient way to generate energy?

"The idea of diverting ag production to produce biofuels is a shockingly bad idea even if biofuels had lower emissions than fossil fuels" @33:25

Ag is the biggest contributor to biodiversity loss. The amount of land currently being used to grow biofuel crops in the world today could feed 1.3B ppl

The world dedicates a Poland-sized area of land to producing liquid biofuels such as bioethanol & biodiesel. Is there a more efficient way to generate energy?

All biofuels are bad.

billionaire: we need radical solutions for Earth Day. Think bold. Biofuels. Space mirrors. Plankton fertilization.

advisor: what about a 2% wealth tax?

billionaire: …Cloud seeding. Turbine farms in the Sahara. A Dyson sphere.

Why are biofuels being so heavily pushed despite their obvious, MASSIVE inefficiencies?

Because they're a fig leaf for continuing to burn stuff, above all fossil fuels.
April 29, 2025 at 6:48 AM
Farming for biofuels is incredibly inefficient. Solar farming would be better and use that land for other crops that FEED people.

Millions of acres of land that could be used to grow crops or grow forests instead being sacrificed to grow biofuels to burn in cars
Using an area equivalent to just 2.5 per cent of this land for solar panels instead, would produce same amount of energy

'Failed experiment’: Experts query the true sustainability of biofuels
‘Right now we surrender vast swathes of land for crops that we simply burn in our cars’, said one expert.

Is burning food and feed crops good for water quality, wildlife habitat, or addressing inequalities in rural communities? No. But is it at least good for the climate? Also no. 🧪
Biofuels Policy, a Mainstay of American Agriculture, Has Been a Failure for the Climate, a New Report Claims - Inside Climate News
A longtime critic of U.S. biofuels says an expansion of biofuels policy under President Donald Trump would lead to more greenhouse gas emissions and fewer food crops.

Biofuels were meant to reduce emissions — but recent evidence shows they’re doing the opposite.

New data suggest that crop-based biofuels are worsening CO₂ emissions globally. 🧵1/3

Canada pledges money, regulatory reform to boost biofuels
The Canadian government on Friday promised hundreds of millions of dollars and less onerous regulations to boost biofuels production, which the country's agriculture minister said faces tough U.S. competition.

There are many more land-efficient ways to produce #energy than growing #biofuels. Crops convert less than 1% of sunlight into biomass; #solarpanels convert around 20%. And using #electricity is more efficient than using liquid fuels: hannahritchie.substack.com/p/biofuels-v... #landuse #biomass
We could produce a lot of electricity on the land used for biofuels
About enough to meet current global electricity demand.
