From "We Who Walk in Shadow," my #EpicFantasy WIP.

Oghor's first conversation with Fae Farran, Ellyll's foster mother.

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #FantasyWriters
She leaned forward with a conspiratorial smile. The flower in her hair gave off a heady scent. Her diamond earrings glittered in the light from the tall window. “Shall we arrive at a compact, you and I? For I feel we are alike.” “Do you.” She laughed, a low, throaty alto sound. “Indeed we are, you old monster. I see the shadow lurking behind you.” He felt again that power he’d felt gathering to her in the infirmary. Nothing in her manner threatened; yet Oghor’s hackles rose.

From my Epic Fantasy novel Demon’s Bargain. Malgrim brings Abber disguised as his apprentice to the Huxen Ambassador’s ball. Abber wants news of her father Grath. She didn’t know her copied white braids had special meaning in Ferruth.
“Your Excellency, I mean no disrespect to your traditions,” said Malgrim, his empty goblet slipping from his fingers to land noiselessly on the sound-deadening rug. Abber caught a terrified look from the servant boy. After a moment to rub his palms on his trousers, Malgrim met Bizal’s gaze. “You could rely on an impious Grath to accept my minstrels.” Bizal stopped in mid-snarl, his disgust sliding into a grin. “Oh, he just might, the brash fool. The Silvern Patrician wrote that Grath had a mistress somewhere in the barony, complete with a brood of bastards. What was the name of that place? The Terrick courier kept asking about Grath’s bastards.” Abber clutched at Malgrim’s shoulder, pulling him to stand. “Will you agree to the contract?” Malgrim asked. Bizal’s face hardened as his eye landed on Abber. “Leave your servant to finish the paperwork and I’ll agree to the contract.” Abber squinted at Bizal. She wanted to dance with the handsome Vetal, not this oaf. Malgrim glanced at Abber nonchalantly. “You have a few things to learn about Ferruthan customs, Your Excellency. Agree to the contract and I’ll have it on your desk by sunrise. More importantly, Grath is getting information from Bivmiav, which means he has a source here. My minstrels can troll every tavern in the city and find them.” Bizal jerked back, eyes wide. His face hardened moments later. “Agreed.” Malgrim brushed biscuit crumbs from his trousers as he stepped back. “Give my prayers of fertility to your wives, Your Excellency, and may your road be guided by Parkith,” Malgrim said. “Next time you negotiate in Ferruth, make sure you treat a woman with white ribbon braids with utmost respect. It means she’s been recently married by a Silva priestess. She brings luck to the side that pleases Her.”

From my Epic Fantasy novel Demon’s Bargain. A happy golden evening with the weird foreign refugees that Despard rescued.
Whooping and spinning to mirror Kahyla’s steps, Despard clapped in the space where she had danced a moment ago. With a giggle, Kahyla bounced on tiptoes before twirling again. Despard bumped into the guardroom wall, trying to match her and collapsed into laughter on the floor. Abber stopped singing the Huxen saga, leaving the fate of another saint unknown. “We’d have more room in the warehouse,” Despard said between panting breaths. “It’s too cold out there,” whined Tebfin. Next to a dented pot, he put down his improvised drumstick, a spoon from the evening’s dinner. “But I’ll go out there if you’ll show me more knife throwing.” Bedrolls and provisions had been pushed back, but the stove and wood crowded the room. Fabric pinned to the walls cut the winter’s fierce winds. Blowing in from the northlands, the wind had plunged Bivmiav into a deeper cold. Despard chuckled. Half his harness gaped empty, the knives still embedded in the makeshift target in the warehouse. Only a few had dropped to the floor when he showed off his skills to the young boy. “Tebfin, let him be,” said Kahyla. “When you’re lord of the manor, you mustn’t exhaust your liege-sworn.” “Master Dimmon wouldn’t let me do something stupid with the Tamrin liege-sworn,” Tebfin said. “Besides, Despard isn’t liege-sworn. He could walk away if he didn’t like the job.” Not quite. Despard needed a reputation to get better jobs. Anton had mentioned that Despard’s absence from the tavern had been noticed. Dancing with Kahyla risked losing contracts that brought hard coin. Money he would need, especially in the spring, when fresh food grew scarce in urban Bivmiav. He rationed his evenings of laughter carefully, bringing a small piece of fruit and performing all the ritual greetings before basking in Kahyla’s family life.

From Epic Fantasy WIP, Waking the Saints, Queen Lualih has finished her audience and meets an unexpected intruder. Previous skirmishes with the Northmen make this ambassador suspect.
Lualih tore the pins from her coolan and handed the crown to her lady-in-waiting. Her head floated, released from the weight, as she escaped the audience room to a back hallway of the palace. “Lady Juho, did you bring the maps?” Lualih peeled a sweaty partlet from her shoulders, tossing it to the hovering servant following her brisk steps. A portrait of a stiff woman dressed in an ancient mode, some forgotten second or third wife of a Huxen king, graced the wall. Even here, the luxury of an artist’s craft consigned to an obscure corner. The map of Gorel barony slid into Lualih’s hand. She glowered at the shadow of Master Vetal on the page, without slowing her walk. “How many of Gorel’s neighbors–” An unframed door opened ahead of her, admitting a fur-capped man with braided white hair and a long tunic. “Blessings upon you, Your Majesty. A moment of your time?” Master Vetal shoved the stranger against the wall, shielding Lualih with his body. Another painted ancestor passed judgment from within a gilded frame. “Is this how you greet a foreign dignitary?” the Northman protested. Vetal continued to pin the man’s arms. “You’ll note my lethal weapons are still sheathed. Who are you and how did you get in here?” “Ambassador Quimmik, at your service. As the ambassador from Chief Bear, I knew I was unlikely to get a formal audience, so I observed where Queen Lualih went between appearances.”

Fae Farran frowned. “Poisons have not been my study. Hard to tell, through the stasis spell—but along with the paralytic, I think it keeps your friend’s body from rejecting the undead tissue. Yet the undead tissue does not return the favor. It attacks the living tissue. In time, this wound will make your friend a sort of living undead. Undead without ever dying.” She rested a tender hand on Gathlenir’s. “You would make a lovely lich, my dear.” Zarzek’s hackles rose. “We will have no liches in this temple, nor partake in the making of liches. Only the living can set foot in the temple of Avikella. Our wards ensure it.” Her throaty laugh startled the cleric—but it was more coquettish than anything sinister. “Oh, of course, my dear Varr. And even should your wards fail, you are safe from liches so long as I am around. Isn’t that so, Ellyll?” Ellyll’s face drew uncharacteristically taut.

From Epic Fantasy WIP, Waking the Saints, a young horsegirl brings news of invasion to the privy council. Quimmick warned Lualih that other clans gathered & asked for a bride of royal blood to seal a treaty. Vetal wants nothing to do with demons.
“How did the Northmen get there so fast? They usually only have a few dozen raiders, mostly on foot,” Baron Vinkel asked. Lualih spared him from a glare as he knew the Northmen’s habits from defending his border barony. “Fort Stronghold Horse Fair. Dozens of trade caravans camped outside the city walls.” “Northmen, mounted. An army of invaders on stolen horses.” Baron Vinkel swept his hand through a ward against evil. “What about the banners? How many, what clans? Cat, Hawk, Wolf…Bear?” Lualih asked. Quimmick frowned at the name of his clan. His mouth flopped open to object before his better sense stopped him. “One Wolf, three Hawk, too many to count of Cat,” Tam said. “If there were banners from Bear, they were on the other side of the city where I couldn’t see them.” “Nor would you,” Quimmick said. “We have kept the treaty! Your Majesty, I warned you the Cat armies threaten us all. Your guard told us when the god-voice spoke, it meant the Cat chief is demon-eaten.” Gimmick waved a hand toward Vetal, who shook his head and backed away from the narrowed eyes of his fellow Blue. “Remember I offered you an alliance!” “The price was too high,” snapped Lualih. Tepaya wasn’t desperate enough to accept the marriage yet. “But I agree the danger is real.” Tauno patted the young girl’s back before striding to the head of the table. “We must assemble an army to drive the invaders out of Huxen.” The servants scrambled to pull out his chair, but he threaded through them to stand behind her. His hands rested on her shoulders, a warm weight that did little to calm her trembling knees hidden beneath her skirts.

From my Epic Fantasy novel Demon’s Bargain. Arriving at a hostage exchange, Kahyla hopes to escape Bizal’s demands for an alliance marriage by distracting him with forbidden magic.
Kahyla rode slowly alongside Malgrim and Despard, like the condemned to the gallows. She could lose everything: Despard, Abber, her freedom, even her life in a fight they couldn’t win. Her hand slipped without thought to the hilt of her dagger peeking out of her riding boots. Despard noticed her movement and silently checked his own set of daggers. Despard hadn’t fully recovered from the injury he’d received while rescuing her. No blame had fallen on her for the cost, only a scribbled poem praising chain mail. He twisted in his saddle, stretching his injured shoulder. Despard trusted his weapons, but Kahyla was trusting Abber’s magic, threatening Bizal with demon magic. She used to know what was right, what she wanted, where she was going. Her goals warped with the changing situation, but she would fight for Despard, for Abber, for Tebfin. Even if it cost her Tamrin Manor. Even if she lost her soul to demons. Kahyla sat straighter in the saddle and urged her horse forward.

Book Snippet for The Legend of Damndrake with store icons and a picture of the book in the background. "Like begging dogs, a drift of humans gathered on the hot roadside, waiting to petition the castle's steward. Where any moment, he’d emerge from the servant’s door to announce the day’s labor needs. Blaze and I stood a short distance away. Two dragons in human-form; we shouldn’t have been there, but if I wanted a job—this was my chance. The humans shot sidelong glances, probably already guessing what we were, but they left us undisturbed. To distract myself from the petitioners’ furtive glimpses, I concentrated on the cowbirds harrying a nearby lemon tree with their enthusiastic insect foraging." Book Snippet for Mapmaker--Book 1 with store icons and a picture of the book in the background. "Like the sputtering breath of the gods, strong winds battered Aleeya, catching at her bound wings and threatening to send her into the sea. An ill omen, the windstorm pummeled the docks of the City of Ka’ai’s First Fjord. The strong gusts forced wingmen out of the sky, though it didn’t lessen the activity on the piers and boardwalk servicing the unending ships that reached the western shores of Helacon. The white gulls’ raucous calling competed with shouted orders. And the strong briny scent of the sea reminded Aleeya she was far from the stately halls of the senate or the quiet library of the temple."

From my Epic Fantasy novel Demon’s Bargain. Despard shows the weird foreign refugees a place to stay.
“Thank you for your generosity,” Kahyla said. The soldier frowned. Kahyla picked her way through the debris. “We’ll need to clean it before we can sleep here.” Abber snorted in agreement. “Is there a bucket for water?” Tebfin squirmed out of Kahyla's reach and picked up a cracked leather strap. Abber nudged a dented bowl from under the remains of a chair. Despairing over Abber’s scandalously unbound hair, Kahyla wondered if any of their other coolans had survived the fire. “You could draw water from the Silva temple a few blocks from here,” said the soldier. His hand crept to a coin closure on his cloak. “The House of Atelle is closer, but the water's sweeter from the goddess' well.” River grit crunched against Kahyla's teeth. A lying demon could disguise mud as pure water. “As a daughter of Parkith, I couldn't enter the temple.” She tugged Abber's hair into a more modest position, receiving a pouting glare in return. “We follow His Laws, even when outside Huxen.” “Huxen? You three are from Huxen? I thought your accent sounded funny.” “The wellspring of morality and the True Faith of Parkith.” Kahyla reflexively formed a flame symbol with three fingers and tapped over her heart. “But you people are zealots! You won't let any trade ships further than Gooseport without some goofy requirements. Ferruthan privateers love taking Huxen ships,” the mercenary said. “Why come here?”

From Epic Fantasy WIP, Waking the Saints. Zorrik obeys the commands of Saint Podru and his god Parkith, but his prejudice against foreigners and their religion gets a shock.
Zorrik choked. “Silva? You’re a demon-worshiper?” “Have you forgotten Saint Podru’s words during my Ordeal?” Kahyla asked. “Repeat them so Despard believes me.” “I haven’t forgotten, m’am. Before the Prelate sealed the record, I copied the entire transcript into my personal journal.” Zorrik closed his eyes and called to mind his smudged hasty handwriting. “‘Kahyla can marry you, if she likes, in addition to that Silva follower Despard. Just make sure you find a Silva priest for that ceremony.’” Zorrik paused under Kahyla’s glare. “‘Or Parkith’s sister will be pissed.’” At last the edge disappeared from his side as Despard’s laughter echoed off the high ceiling of the receiving room. “Blessed by Her Luck, it’s real,” Despard spun Kahyla in his arms. “Mine, you’re mine!” Despite Kahyla’s smile, she shouldn’t allow it, a tien-queen mishandled by her own guard. Hardly his primary concern but perhaps King Tauno was right to send her into exile.
