Was told by someone at Gotham after Friday’s game that while they don’t expect Emily Sonnett to be ready for the start of the 2027 NWSL season, they are hopeful that she will be healthy for the World Cup in the summer. #GothamFC #NWSL #USWNT

I asked Emma Hayes today about the long-term absences of Catarina Macario, Olivia Moultrie and Emily Sonnett, and when she would hope to have them back for them to have a shot at the World Cup.

As usual, Hayes had a long answer:

www.inquirer.com/soccer/uswnt...
This is one of the hardest things, always, to answer to the media when players pick up injuries. We always want a straightforward answer in return to play. But it doesn't work like that. Because if I take each and every one of them – Catarina Macario when she made the move to San Diego, was struggling with her Achilles, for example. Resolves an Achilles issue, but her knee then flared up. So then you've got to deal with the impact of that. So is it right for Catarina Macario to get it right for the next, sort of, longer term? Absolutely. But with every day that a player is off the pitch, it gets harder to return, because being durable really, really matters. But do I expect that Catarina Macario will be available for the January camp? That's my hope. Do I think she could be back sooner? At what cost, would be the question. But she also has to respond to everything that goes well within that. She's on the grass, she's training. I think building up that tolerance is an important next step for her. I think with Emily Sonnett, when you get an injury like she did, it's about the individual and how quickly they respond. Will she be available next season for her team? Absolutely. When? I don't know. Depends how well she recovers. Do I think she will be available? Who knows? My job, I can't think about those things. I have to think about the players that are available. Which is why I've always been adamant [that] we have to develop a larger playing pool, because just like that, something can happen. And we could be in situations that in even this camp, maybe we will be without two of our starting centerbacks. If I don't prepare players to be ready, then I won't be doing my job. So obviously, with Tierna Davidson, with Kennedy [Wesley], with Tara Rudd, there is the opportunity to do that. And then if you take the [under] 23s as a good example, the fact that we can have over-age players – you have a player like Kate Del Fava, who's had a really good year. It might not mean that she'll come into the senior national team, sit on the bench, and be under-developed. Playing her with the 23s, she gets to learn exactly how we want to play. We get a chance to assess technically, tactically, physically, emotionally, psychologically where she's really at. And she's building that bank of games. And if the opportunity presents itself, [she] might get that step up into the senior team. But this, we feel, is the best way to develop the larger playing pool without there being such a gap, let's say, from 20s to seniors. The under-23 squad is going to be announced tomorrow. It's a tremendous group. It's probably the best group we have had in that category. I looked at it and I thought, 'What a success for our program that we are developing so many players to still rehearse and practice in an international setting outside of the A-team. So, yeah. injured players, they're always going to happen. My job is to try and prepare. Sometimes it can be worse in some parts of the pitch than it is others. It's far from ideal. But I have to put my energy into the players that are fit and available.

Below is a statement from #GothamFC regarding investigating the incident at Sunday's match (with alt text).
Gotham FC is aware of an incident involving hateful language directed at Barbra Banda during Sunday’s match between our team and Orlando Pride. We are united in our message with the NWSL and the Orlando Pride: This behavior is unacceptable and has no place in our league or in our stadiums. Stadium security swiftly responded to the incident once it was reported and directly addressed the individual, monitoring the situation for the remainder of the match. Gotham FC and the NWSL are working together to further investigate the incident and take additional action where appropriate under the league's Fan Code of Conduct. Gotham FC leaders on Monday reached out to the Orlando Pride to apologize for the incident and reiterate our unwavering support of Barbra Banda. As a club, we will always work to protect and reinforce the inclusive spirit of our Gotham FC and NWSL community, and we will hold responsible any individuals who violate or infringe upon those efforts and values.

Thoughts on #GothamFC kit - I love the shade of blue, I think it does a good job of capturing the roots of the team. I’m not sold on the blacked out crest. It’s cool stylistically but on what’s supposed to be an away jersey you can’t see it! I’m also not sure how I feel about the shoulder situation.
