Edmonton’s Lois Hole Hospital for Women experienced a significant surge in births during the summer of 2026, with 1,720 babies born between May and July. This marks nearly 20 births per day, including 61 sets of twins and four sets of triplets. Neonatologist Dr. Sowjanya Sivakoti noted that the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) faced unprecedented demand, with some shifts seeing five babies born within an hour. Labour and delivery nurse Fernanda Fernandes described the workload as overwhelming, emphasizing the dedication of staff to ensure patient safety. The increase in multiple births may be linked to higher fertility drug usage, according to Sivakoti. NICU teams, including nurses, doctors, dietitians, and respiratory therapists, worked collaboratively despite staffing challenges. A case study highlighted the early delivery of twin boys, Rowan and Harrison Wiese, who were born 14 weeks premature via C-section. Their mother, Kasidy Wiese, was transported by air ambulance from Westlock. While the hospital’s capacity was stretched, Wiese reported that care quality remained unaffected. The hospital continues to provide comprehensive women’s health services, including cord blood collections and maternal support programs.
