German does yearning so well. ’Fernweh’, ‘far-sickness’, is the longing for distant places, while ‘Sehnsucht’ is a wistful desire for something intangible. #shoutoutforgerman

Dear British students – Please learn German! It's a beautiful, rich & useful language & you can compete to make the longest compound noun. Mine is "'Weltpolitikfähigkeitverlustvermeidungsstrategie'".
47 letters (& yes, it does make sense).

And my German teacher... Mrs Karin Baker who died just last month in her mid 80s. Taught me German from year 10 to year 13. Amazing life story growing up in Berlin in the early 1940s, coming to England ca 1947 as the step-daughter of an English soldier, marrying a Jewish man. #shoutoutforgerman

I have so many German friends. I learnt enough in school to 'get by', more when I worked in Brussels. My German improves after 2 beers...

Had many, many happy times in Germany.

Someone get me a Currywurst from a Schnelli quick, please!
