I use photos as a reference, however my best efforts seem to be birds I know well and see day to day, as I can include character. Maybe that’s why I find Owls tricky. I’ve had a few attempts at them - here are some that are ok. 🪶

A collection of the Nuthatches I have painted. I have a soft spot for painting them, because after one I did ages ago, it was the first time I actually felt proud of a painting I had done. Love the colours too!

After 4 years teaching myself, I think I FINALLY understand this whole watercolour layering thing. I probably would have got it quicker had I had lessons, but I’m not convinced I’d have had half the fun. Here’s this morning’s therapy! 🪶🪶

Did I say I was going to leave @carlbovisnature.bsky.social alone? Well, he shouldn’t keep posting such fabulous photos. I’ve been watching the Nuthatches, trying to get a more active painting, and his recent photo helped me enormously. Thanks Carl. 🪶🪶

I’m am seriously beginning to love these oil pastels - they are so immediate and the textures are wonderful. Just feeling my way - trial and error. 35 mins well spent tonight. 🪶🪶
