##SwordAndSorcery

A somewhat maximalist, very collage-heavy experiment piece this month, using a lot of my photography and some old Slovenian art
Digital collage and painting on vertical canvas Theme: Fantasy / Dark fantasy / Experimental Character: My OC Lubi (he/him, transmasc) and a skeleton #Artsky #QueerArt #TransArt #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery This piece is almost entirely composed of photographs I took. It features a central long corridor that disappears into the darkness, every side of it a different texture. The left and right walls are photos of old walls, the ceiling is wood, and the floor is an enlarged photo of a gingerbread cookie I bought in a Polish shop in Ljubljana once, overlaid with an assortment of Turkish delight from Lidl. I've had these two photos for like 3 years and I'm so happy to finally put them to use lmao In the front, slightly left stands a knight, who was traced with a lasso tool over a relief sculpture from Celje. He's wearing a dark armour with very colourful accents on skirt and flag, and his head is a fire. On his knee guards, one can spot a unicorn and a stag beetle in trans flag colours. In the upper right corner, a dragon's head is sticking out of a wall, the fire it breathes joining in with the knight's fire hair. For this head I used a photo from an ornament on one of the 'healing springs' near my hometown. It's coloured in somewhat garish colours that reoccur across the picture, magenta, aqua, green and blue, and notably three of its fangs depict the white, pink and blue or the trans flag. Lastly, underneath the head stands a skeleton, cut from the famous Danse Macabre fresco from the Holy Trinity Church in Hrastovlje. The skeleton is orange with green shadows, and splashes of magenta on some parts of its body.

here's a very belated may experimental!
Digital illustration on vertical canvas Theme: Fantasy / Dark fantasy / Experimental Character: My OC Lubi, he/him, transmasc #Artsky #QueerArt #TransArt #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery Because I had no time in May to work on the monthly experiment, I wanted to make something quick and simple, so this piece has a central composition, depicting an unshaded fullbody character against a (very edited) photo background. The character is a transmasculine person, as seen by the scars on his chest. He is a sword & sorcery-style knight, wearing no shirt or pants, but only a chainmail loin cloth, ornate girdle, fringed boots, cape and a pig-nose helmet with a heart-shaped visor. There is a heart-shaped hole on his chest, and fire rising from a hole on top of his helmet. He is standing in a relaxed pose, holding his sword vertically across his shoulders. He is coloured nearly flat in two hues of light brownish-orange, accentuated with heavily textured lineart. Behind him is a red fiery frame with a glowing effect. The background is a heavily edited photo. The sky appears purple and does not hide pixellated particles caused by the editing. Below the sky is a dark green treeline, most details of which were erased. Lastly there is the grass, which took on a reddish hue.

This is a multimedia piece I've been wanting to do for months, character is painted in acrylics on a digital photo manipulation printed background. Also, it's been a while since my monthly experiments had a more playful tone!
Multimedia painting on vertical canvas Theme: Fantasy / Dark fantasy / Experimental Character: My OC Lubi, he/him, transmasc #Artsky #QueerArt #TransArt #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery This is a mixture of digital and traditional process. First I edited a photo background and added a digital line sketch, which I got printed on imitation canvas, and then finished by painting the character with acrylics. The piece is pretty big - 104 x 139 cm. The background is a photo of an old wine basement, appearing like a cave with brick walls. I edited it to get a blue and green-yellow palette. The character is sitting on the floor in the center of the cave, grinning. The nose, mouth and eyes are the only other part of this piece that was done digitally, as I was unsure if I could paint the sharp edges of the design. He's wearing a hooded cape, which gives the impression of an invisible coat, as its colours reflect the colour of the background in a blurry way. He's wearing a black shirt which extends into a loin cloth with a green, zig-zag edge. The shape of the hood covering his face is a heart. His face is partially shadowed, while red fiery hair is sticking out on the leftside. He's wearing gauntlets, which are shaded in much more delicate detail than the rest of the character. The metallic shading also extends to the wavy-bladed sword. His boots are red and black, with a somewhat checkered pattern. Behind him is a wall which is transparent in the middle, having a dreamlike impression. On the wall of the cave which took on the greenish-yellow tint in the photomanipulation process, I painted a torch with a green flame. On the upper left part of the painting is a yellow moon crescent. Lastly on the top right edge of the painting are a couple of crystals, catching the colours of their surroundings, which makes them almost invisible until you notice them. I really love how these turned out.

We already know the old King Conan, but I always wondered what would look like an aged Red Sonja.
She surely would be a queen, ruling an Hyborian kingdom... maybe Zingara ? Or Ophir ?

March experimental
Digital illustration on vertical canvas Theme: Fantasy / Dark fantasy / Experimental Character: My OC Lubi, he/him, transmasc #Artsky #QueerArt #TransArt #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery The background of this piece is dark, in grey, black and few flashes of blue, while the featured character is coloured in hues of pink and orange, as well as a touch of darker purple and green. An edited photograph was used as the base of the background, with a few hand-drawn patches of grass and a roughly sketched bare tree on the distant right. The sky was cut out from the photograph and left flatly grey, with a few elements scattered about it as well; a couple of hand-drawn dark pink clouds on the left, a line drawing of a wild boar on the right in green line, and two hand-drawn stars. The rest of the stars are taken from a photo of the night sky at my parents place, with Orion's belt clearly seen on the right-side in the boar's head. On the topmost edge of the image is a pink greek key pattern, which turns downwards a little before the right-side edge. The end of the downturned pattern nearly reaches one of the hand-drawn stars, which is placed over the boar's eye. The character is placed in the middle of the image, kneeling and wielding a sword. His body is turned leftwards, and his torso is slightly twisted so that the full image of the sword is facing the viewer, lightly obscuring the character's face. The sword is in a light orange/yellow colour, while the face is set in darker tones - desaturated purple, grey and black. While most of the body is pink, his right arm is blue. The character is nude, except for a dark green loin cloth with a thin golden belt. On his feet, he is wearing yellow sandals. On his head, he is wearing a dark grey helm with a heart-shaped visor. Through a heart-shaped hole in his chest flies a powdery blue falling star, aiming for an illuminated circle on the floor behind the character.

Finally, a very belated February experiment piece! I barely had time for art last month, so I kept this one as a simple drawing that could be used for screenprinting in the near future.
Digital illustration on vertical canvas Theme: Fantasy / Dark fantasy Character: My OC Lubi, he/him, transmasc #Artsky #QueerArt #TransArt #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery A very simple monthly experiment for a change, a rough two colour image in blue and pink. It depicts a graphic design of a character standing in a hole in the ground, holding a sword and looking angry. The art is stylized with a use of many triangular and wavy lines to achieve a graphic effect, while other aspects, mainly the character's body, are more organic, but still very rough in style. There is a rose on the image, implying the character is rising from his grave, and the background implies a night-time, natural setting due to the depiction of a couple of stars and a pine tree. The top of the image depicts a quote; "THE HOLE YOU PUT ME IN / WASN'T DEEP ENOUGH" The piece is predominantly dark blue drawing on a pink background with hints of other colours provided by texturing. It also has a white outline in certain places, as the white bottom layer was slightly moved to achieve the effect.

So with a wonder and a wild desire
I will crawl from under every weight -[♫]
Digital illustration on horizontal canvas Theme: Fantasy / Dark fantasy / Experimental Character: My OC Lubi, he/him, transmasc #Artsky #QueerArt #TransArt #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery This is a digital piece, using a lot of collaging for texture and background elements. It features an armoured character with fire hair and a sword gazing towards a black spired castle being struck by lighting, backed by a rainbow. The ground is dark, as are the clouds above, but the central section shows a blue and pink sky, reflecting in the puddle of water in the foreground. A line of four tall trees leads to the right of the castle, and two black birds are accompanying the character. Right of the lighting is a series of black stars/sparkles in a distinct pattern. The pattern is based on Braille, spelling "Fix your heart or die". The initial background was lifted from a scene in Excalibur (1981) and re-textured with my own photographs. The armour was also copied from a different scene in the movie and outlined fully with lasso tool. Specifically, I turned to Excalibur for the extreme shininess of armours in it. The background also uses one of my photographs, mostly smudged with a little bit of a treeline seen in the distance. The fire hair, birds, trees, castle and lightning were all freehanded with lasso tool, giving them a rough shape.

The sun will rise by the sorcerer's call -[♫]
Digital illustration on vertical canvas Theme: Fantasy / Dark fantasy / Experimental Character: My OC Uvar, he/him, transmasc #Artsky #QueerArt #TransArt #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery This predominantly red piece features my sorcerer Uvar casting a spell and definitely not looking too friendly. He is standing slightly on the left side of the canvas, his left arm raised up in the center. His black-clawed open palm covers a white full moon. He is naked, save for a striped black-white-pinkish loin cloth and a black hooded cloak. He is crowned with a red and green wrapped band. His arms are red - covered in blood - and his skin has a purple hue. The black cloak is flowing wildly upwards on the sides, turning into abstract wispy shapes on the upper part of the image. It also billows on the bottom-right quarter of the canvas, showing it's red inner lining and tasseled edge. Below it, the canvas is left white. Uvar's face, cast in shadow, boasts a white grin and his one green eye is facing the viewer. His right (our left) eye is missing, replaced by a red scar. His ears aren't seen, but his two big red round earrings are. Basically I thought the last picture I drew of him was too static and mirrored and I thought he deserved much better, so this is a much more interesting and dynamic piece.

Digital illustration on vertical canvas Theme: Fantasy / Dark fantasy / Sword & Sorcery / FanArt Character: Elric of Melnibone #Fantasy #Fantasyart #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery #ElricofMelnibone A black and white illustration with some chromatic effects in dull blue and pink. It depicts the main character, the albino prince Elric of Melnibone, standing in the bottom-middle with his right arm raised high, holding a black sword. The sword is top-central in the image and emits a blinding light. Elric has long white hair and an angry expression, and he is wearing a short black tunic. His checkered belt is decorated by the Chaos symbol. A chain across his chest implies he is wearing a cape, which is depicted in a somewhat abstract way, as a white shape behind him. Leftwards of elric is a large snarling canine beast, and rightwards is a rising smoke. In the upper-right and the lower-left corner are two large clawed hands, seemingly coming to grasp Elric. The bottom one is cast in shadow in the foreground, and the upper one highlighted by the light from the sword.

Another melancholic Ire, but pink this time, which it superior
Digital illustration on vertical canvas Theme: Fantasy / Dark fantasy / Experimental Character: My OC Ire, he/him, #Artsky #QueerArt #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery This piece features predominantly pink and lilac hues. In central composition it depicts a warrior (Ire), resting his green war axe on the ground next to him, with one leg on a slightly higher ledge than the other. He's wearing a black/grey sleeveless shirt and a colourful loin cloth in green, red, pink and blue. His body is of a pink colour, while his face is green with red and black markings and two horns on his forehead. His hair (depicted with only a flat black shape) is long and black, sticking out in the back like red-tipped quills. His expression is grim. In the background we see a foggy sky with a partially clouded rising sun, and a brief view of mountains on the left. The ground Ire stands on is grey and purple, while behind we can see a shock of tall blue grass. On the right of the foreground is a cluster of pink and blue flowers with pointed petals. Overall the painting has a very painted look, and an applied texture to mimic a slightly weathered book cover.

I'm Jim Brin, a Slovenian illustrator, and recently I've been known to draw plenty of experimental queer sword & sorcery-esque stuff. I'd love to get some cover/illustration work this year, so if my art sounds interesting, consider looking at my portfolio! #PortfolioDay 🌈 neonufo.art

Style study 1/4 - Samurai Jack

This was an easy one, I've done Samurai Jack style before and it was just as fun now as it was then. Process details in alt text!
The first thing I do for style studies is to find a character that looks the most similar to mine anatomy-wise. For Ire, that body match was Da Samurai. I closely referenced an existing Samurai Jack background to keep it stylistically accurate. Genndy Tartakovsky's style was a strong influence on mine so it was really a breeze, especially being as cartoony and lineless as it is. Most Samurai Jack screenshots I found had a very distorted image, like an old VHS, so I wanted to mimic that too for extra authenticity. Thankfully I didn't need to figure out my own way of doing this, as I know of a website that provides this exact filter; HEISEI-VHS -------------------------------- IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Character: Ire (OC, he/him) #Artsky #QueerArt #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery Digital drawing done in a cartoony, flat lineless style of Samurai Jack (Genndy Tartakovsky). It depicts a warrior standing at the ready with a green, black-edged axe in his hands. The character is wearing a dark tank top and a red, yellow and purple furred skirt. His body is white, while his face is brown with distinct markings. Two large black horns extend from his head, blending into the long black hair which grows into long spikes in the back. He is standing against a purple and red background, also done in a very stylized and lineless aesthetic. My signature is depicted in form of a Cartoon Network logo in the bottom left corner.

experimental piece for july! last moment replacement for something i realized i couldn't pull off on time. very rushed, but it turned out pretty cool!
Digital illustration on vertical canvas Theme: Fantasy / Dark fantasy / Experimental Character: My OC Lubi, he/him, transmasc #Artsky #QueerArt #TransArt #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery This is a digital piece, predominantly in black, red, white and brownish colour. In the center a fully black figure seems to be phasing through the background, as only parts of his body are visible. Some of these parts are flat, while others have highlights that give it dimension. The figure wears only a loin cloth and a helmet. There is a red heart on his chest, and stylized top surgery scars - these three elements are very central to the piece, drawing one's eye to them. A stylized fiery ponytail seems to be attacked at the back of the helmet, and similar wavy styled flames surround the figure on left and right. At the bottom part of the image, the red phrase "SEE IT THROUGH" can be seen. The figure is holding a sword, the blade of which is piercing through the O in 'THROUGH'. The background is a heavily edited and distorted photo, and the image has a white overlay that makes it look like a damaged book or poster.

The Champion Ire
Digital illustration on vertical canvas Theme: Fantasy / Dark fantasy / Experimental Character: My OC Ire, he/him #Artsky #DarkFantasy #SwordAndSorcery #OCsky #OCart This an image drawn in a rough style and has a dim, warm light to it. The foreground is cast in shady black, brown and green colours, while the background is light brown with a pop of a colourful mountain range in red, yellow, green and purple, fading into the blue mist at the lower part of the image. Above the mountain is a dimly glowing sun, and at the very top of the image the sky turns from light brown to blue. The character is standing central in the image, on a somewhat steep, grassy hill. Above it on the right is a rocky arch, covered with moss. Scattered in the tall thick grass is a variety of flowers in purple, yellow and blue. Ire's long black hair and red-tipped spines are blown leftwards in the wind. His clothing is not individually coloured, as he is fully covered in green, brown, black and touches of dark blue, but he is wearing a tight sleeveless top with a large metal necklace, and a loin cloth. He has three red scars on his right arm, which is holding a bloodied gladius-type sword made of green metal. Ire's face is largely cast in shadow, only showing one eye and nose, but that is enough to imply a grim expression.

three adventurers move down a narrow stone tunnel: a moustachioed man in a nasal helm leads the way, a primed crossbow raised, a wind mouse sitting on his shoulder; following is an elf with a spiral tattoo on her cheek, a torc around her neck and mail beneath her tunic, hefting an axe in both hands; bringing up the rear is a dark-eyed mage in robes and a tall, curving hat, the glow from the crystalline head of her staff lighting the darkness of the tunnel with an eery green light.
