I've never seen THE ACCUSED (1949). But if this guy gets bumped off, he totally deserves it.

“Bill, you’re hurting me.”

I think this may be Robert Cummings’ best moment in the movie. He looks at her – and he knows. (But in the parlance of the TV show Friends, she doesn’t know that he knows.) #FilmNoirClub #TheAccused

This is most visually memorable sequence in the film. The cops are depicted as the callous monsters Loretta Young's character believes them to be.

Shameless plug for my book on William Dieterle, one of the pioneers who revolutionized Hollywood, but whose contributions have been largely undervalued. If you don’t know his work, it’s worth exploring: www.amazon.com/dp/B0FK127P37/ #FilmNoirClub #TheAccused

THE ACCUSED (1949) makes an end run around the Production Code by truncating the trial and excluding Loretta Young's testimony.

But we know what she said — and we know she'll be cleared.

This kind of implied storytelling is one of the unique aspects of the Studio Era. #TheAccused #FilmNoirClub

Bob Cummings' character implies that his previous client got off because she was young and pretty.

An interesting piece of commentary from a film that's trying to make 30-something Loretta Young look frumpy beyond her years.

Loretta Young as Dr. Wilma Tuttle.

After deciding not to re-sign with 20th Century Fox in 1939 and watching every studio blackball her – because no one wanted to reward a disobedient female – she’d doggedly fought her way back, winning the 1947 Oscar for Farmer’s Daughter. #FilmNoirClub #TheAccused

Complicit also are the men who were invited to rape this woman, who declined but, knowing she was being gang raped, did nothing to help her.

The film, #TheAccused, was of its time, but it seems that silent bystander plot line still is horrifyingly relevant.

Guys, be active allies.

This is a very important story.

No, it's not political. It's not about the Middle East. It's not about money.

But it is about the technological time we are living in. And how this can pervert all our lives.

It's horrific what happened to Gisèle Pelicot.

Oh gosh, thank you for joining me for #TheAccused. Thanks to @wahrhaftig.bsky.social for letting me host this one, as it’s (obviously) a film I love. FYI, this was Dieterle‘s first noir. His others are Rope of Sand, Dark City and The Turning Point – all worth a watch. #FilmNoirClub

#TheAccused marks the end of Dieterle’s greatest period. From 1938-49, he directed an astonishing run of films that include The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Devil and Daniel Webster, and Portrait of Jennie. Then HUAC branded him a “premature anti-fascist,” and job offers soon dried up. #FilmNoirClub

Robert Cummings as Warren Ford.

Eternally youthful, he’s best remembered now for his Hitchcock thrillers (Saboteur, Dial M for Murder) and lighthearted romances (It Started With Eve), although The Chase is a swell noir. Achieved his biggest fame in his ‘50s TV series. #FilmNoirClub #TheAccused

Note how many mirrors director William Dieterle scatters throughout the film, exposing Young: watching her come undone or fight to regroup. I’d propose a drinking game where we took a shot every time we see a mirror, but we’d probably be sloshed 30 minutes in. #FilmNoirClub #TheAccused

Sam Jaffe as Dr. Romley.

Oscar nominated for The Asphalt Jungle, Jaffe was a method actor before the term was in vogue. His film roles were limited (High Lama in Lost Horizon and the title role in Gunga Din, among them), but he worked steadily in TV till his death in 1984. #FilmNoirClub #TheAccused

In the ‘30s, a film heroine could have it all: the career she coveted and a man who valued her independent spirit. But WWII altered the power dynamics; strong women had to be put in their place. They were reinvented as evil femme fatales or supportive girls next door. (1/3) #FilmNoirClub #TheAccused

“Kill him! Kill him! Kill him!”

BTW, you might have been tempted to think that this woman yelling “Kill him!” was a rip-off of The Set-Up, released the same year. Except #TheAccused was filmed six months earlier. #FilmNoirClub

(3/3) What #TheAccused laments are the parts of Wilma she’s had to bury in order to succeed. June Truesdell’s novel is about a fearful woman who liberates herself. Frings *explains* the fear by showing how men at the time viewed & treated women. It’s the rare feminist noir. #FilmNoirClub #TheAccused

"In the United States a rape is reported every six minutes. One out of every four rape victims is attacked by two or more assailants”.

This stat is from the movie #TheAccused released in 1988. It’s still relevant today. #Cornell

Highly recommend the film. It was Jodi Foster’s 1st Oscar win.

The film is left open-ended, but not really. By regaining her sense of self, by letting go of her fear and holding onto her career (all while gaining a suitor who adores her), Wilma has morphed into a Thirties heroine. And Thirties heroines didn’t just win; they triumphed. #FilmNoirClub #TheAccused
