Inside the mother of all Neolithic tombs ... Newgrange in Ireland. This photo, from excavator Michael O'Kelly's book, shows the chamber (with spiral carving) that is illuminated via the famous roofbox opening at winter solstice. A 5,200-yr-old celebration of the return of the sun. #TombTuesday

The tomb of the Venerable Bede in the 12th century Galilee Chapel at Durham Cathedral. Bede’s relics were transferred from Jarrow to Durham in 1022, and eventually placed in the Galilee Chapel during the later 14th century. 📸 My own. #TombTuesday #DurhamCathedral #Bede

It’s #TombTuesday & and this is the magnificent polychrome sarcophagus of Selanti Hanunia Tlesnasa, a wealthy Etruscan lady. Typical of Etruscan tombs, she reclines on a pillow holding a mirror in her left hand, displaying her face with her right. She was about 50 when she died.

Let’s go inside Bryn Celli Ddu!

A remarkable Neolithic passage tomb built some 5,000 years ago to align with midsummer sunrise! 🌅

Look out for the stone pillar in the burial chamber. Pehaps a tomb guardian keeping watch from the shadows!

I'm seeing a few Welsh sites this #TombTuesday, so to join in here is lovely Carreg Samson on the Pembrokeshire coast. The huge capstone was put in place by St Samson of Dol, using only his little fingernail ...

The rising sun on the longest day of the year lights up the inner burial chamber, where a stone pillar keeps watch from the shadows.

Delightful Ricardian tomb to Maud, wife of Sir Thomas Harcourt, dated to ca. 1394 at Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire. I wonder what poetry she listened to and what music she enjoyed in those far off troubled days? #TombTuesday

Faces of power from long ago fashioned most finely from stone. Here, Sir Edward de Benstede and his wife Joan Thornbury at Benington, Herts. Edward successfully navigated the end of Richard II’s reign to serve under Henry IV. Remarkably, he was around 77 when he died - a grand age. #TombTuesday

For #RockinTuesday a view of the cairn from a walk up Knocknarea in 2023.

Although I have pictures taken closer, I chose this one as the walkers ahead on the path give a sense of just how big it is.
