I stumbled upon this massive shed tooth in the Hell Creek Formation recently.

Tyrannosaurus rex lost teeth and replaced them continuously through life and each animal probably spit out several hundred. Still finding them like this is rare. 🦖🧪

Happy #ToothyTuesday from the gigantic Kansas shark Cretoxyrhina mantelli. Shark teeth are fairly common finds in these cretaceous outcrops. This one was found below Marker Unit 5, putting it at about 87MYA

This was the first fossil I found on my last trip out to the Niobrara chalk this fall. 🧪🦈

Happy #ToothyTuesday from this pathological Daspletosaurus tooth from the 75 million year old sediments of the Judith River Formation.

This specimen has split carinae (the serrated edge) on the front side in an upside down "Y" pattern. Relatively uncommon, and a treat to find in the field. 🦖 🧪

Happy #ToothyTuesday from this shark mosaic made up almost entirely from shed cretaceous shark teeth recovered from the Niobrara chalk.

You too can bear witness to this spectacle at the Fick museum in Oakley, KS
I can't imagine how long it would take to find this many teeth. Like on a good day I find 6. This mosaic is shocking.

the wavy, curved cusps on these premolars & molars reflect their function in filter-feeding krill (= marine crustaceans, thus “crabeater”)

The largest cusp is the 2nd-3rd most mesial cusp, with 1-2 smaller cusps mesially and 2-3 smaller cusps distally. The largest cusp is especially curved, curving distally. Cusps are fairly blunt (i.e., not sharp), reflecting their use in filter-feeding. In addition to the postcanines, unicuspid incisors and canines are present.
