Our wonderous planet has been very well recieved.

But this was a achieved through an audience-focussed design with a committed project team who constantly checked in with audiences to inform decision-making.

Stated from what audiences keen, and what they wanted.

Impact Mapping at ACMI.

Shows that "changing minds" is a higher bar impact indicator, and harder to realise in an exhibition and to measure.

Next goal is an organisation-wide impact models.

And the age old question - how to measure long-term impacts beyond the visit.

Ethnography is the why.

In age of datafication we need ethnography more.

For #GLAM its more than just how many attend it's what are they getting.

(Or, as Michael Kimmelman said: "The question should not be how many people visit museums but how valuable are their visits.")

As travelling by car, most of the expenditure happens before they even get to the destination, then food + accommodation so not much room for other spend.

Very interesting observation.

How to keep the exhibition current and relevant for changing audiences and changing forms of interpretation and engagement?

A key question for future audience research.

Measuring longitudinal impact is achievable

And plan for this at the beginning

Us the right methodology at the time, and be flexible

We're not just delivering research, we are ere building a research culture

"Audience-focussed is not audience-led" bring the team along on the journey

Empathy mapping role describes the emotional impact on visitors.

MV design team worked with design students from monash university.

A cathartic process for the project team - connected exhibition team with real audiences.

How students felt before the exhibition visit and then after. 👇

Solution was to create a series of immersive experiences that were based around hope and showing how systems are connected.

Responsive reseach design.

Love this - digital chaos and tech failures (can) lead to better interactions with locals and the culture.

Expectations vs Value

Anxiety is real, but the opportunity is to turn these into wonder (conversations, new experiences) that leads to (unexpected) learning.

Fascinating thatvetch fail.can lead to unexpected outcomes that are valuable ways of experiencing culture in delightful ways.

Digital as a cultural and shared experience and within different cultural contexts.

Digital structure is uneven in many countries.

Very important points here, think about developing economies, different digital experiences when "export" from Western culture.

Overall very positive response to smell in the exhibition.

A practical toolkite including research as to why scent impairment in exhibitions 👇

Smell is universal so is very inclusive.

Excellent presentation 👏

Design of the gallery can echo the smell.

Humans are very good at sensing smell - better than dogs and sharks! So don't need much smell in a gallery space.

Not a great idea to surprise people with smell in gallery, may think bad chemicals so honest, open visitor information critical.

Challenge in exhibition spaces is scale (large rooms, high ceilings)

Australia has over 900 species of eucalypt so was another challenge

Responses to smell are deeply personal and linked to memory so cant predict visitor's experiencing scents

Nice way to show audiences in a graphical way.

And, a simple way to articulate visitor outcomes that can be complex.

Also loving the idea of 'rapid research' as remedial evaluation.

ACMI's focus on impact - for visitors and for the organisation.

"Audiences are at the heart of our decision-making"

Don't position research as a critique of staff, but as a way to learn and improve.

Develop approach where insights are delivered at critical decision making phases.

People coming to a safe place like the library to connect and get a sense of belonging.

SLV is the third busiest in the world!

Developed audience pathways to look at the wide range of motivations across the whole visit journey.

How to get sustainable audience research happening.

It all comes down to what you need to know, then how to gather the data / tools to use.

Impact depends on how the organisation uses the data, not just collect it.
