Fourteen members of the US Colored Troops received the Medal of Honor for their heroics #OTD in 1864.

By the end of the Battle of New Market Heights, over 50 percent of the Black division had been killed, captured, or wounded.

US Marine Corporal Laville was killed in a fire at Cherry Point Naval Air Station in 1944. She died while rescuing fellow Marines.

An obstacle on the final training course at Parris Island is named “Cpl. Laville’s Duty.”

The mortal remains of Seaman 1st Class Wayne Newton were laid to rest yesterday in his hometown in Indiana.

Newton was KIA while on board the USS California on December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor.

Mess Attendant Dorie Miller was aboard the USS West Virginia #OTD in 1941 during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He manned a machine gun and was awarded the Navy Cross for his bravery. The Pittsburgh Courier saved his story for us today.

Marine Pfc Harold Gonsalves was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism 80 years ago next month. He received this award posthumously. He died in Okinawa when he threw himself on a grenade to save fellow Marines.

He was very young, only is his middle twenties, but he carried in him a sincerity and gentleness that made people want to be guided by him.

“After my own father, he comes next,” a sergeant told me.

“He always looked after us,” a soldier said. “He’d go to bat for us every time.”

Miller did not survive #WW2. He was aboard the USS Liscome Bay (ACV/CVE-56) when it was torpedoed on November 24, 1943. It sank in 23 minutes, 644 sailors went down with their ship.

Born #OTD in 1914, British agent Noor Inayat Khan. She worked with the French resistance as wireless operator. She was captured by the Nazis and executed at Dachau in 1944.

Khan received the George Cross and the French Croix de Guerre posthumously.

Senator Inouye was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for heroism #OTD in 1945. He was a Lieutenant in Company E of the 442d Regimental Combat Team. The 442d was a segregated Japanese American army combat unit.

US Army Private First Class Sadao Munemori received the Medal of Honor for his heroics #OTD 80 years ago. He was a member of The 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a segregated Japanese-American unit.

His family was imprisoned in the Manzanar internment camp during #WW2.

Three US Army soldiers received the Medal of Honor for their heroism #OTD in 1943 - Pvt. Mikio Hasemoto, Capt. Allen Masaharu Ohata and Pvt. Shizuya Hayashi. All 3 were "Nisei" - first generation Japanese-Americans.

U.S. Navy Fireman 1st Class Fred H. Boyer was buried today, he died aboard the USS West Virginia on December 7, 1941.

This one hits a bit closer to home - he likely went to school with the Aults before joining the Navy.

US Air Force Captain Mary Therese Klinker of Lafayette, IN was KIA #OTD 51 years ago. She was part of 'Operation Babylift' to evacuate children from Vietnam. She is memorialized on panel O1W, row 122 of "The Wall."

The 442nd Infantry Regiment is the most decorated unit in the history of the US Army. Twenty one soldiers from the 442nd were awarded the Medal of Honor. Many of the volunteers in this unit had family in internment camps.
