Turns out next door Bauhaus has the parts, at good price. Direct Signs 55cm RGB-CCT led strip plus DS Zigbee controller does the job needed. Had a suitable 24V power supply in my garage so this was well below target budget of 50,- €.

The other two are still fine.
Will see if it was due to dodgy batteries or if something is fucky with them.
