The year was 1937 and the young woman in the white dress is Veronica Burleigh with her mother Averil and father Charles. By this time, all three were professional painters and longstanding exhibitors at the Royal Academy. Veronica was born in 1909 in a house purpose built for art. Her parents had designed 7 Wilbury Crescent in Hove with the family business in mind. After studying at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1927–30, under Henry Tonks, Burleigh exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts (RA), Sussex Women’s Art Club (SWA) and with the Sussex Painters, at Worthing, where the public gallery holds her work. Her famous art includes Little Ballet Dancers, Scene Painters and Calliope. During World War II, she served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Burleigh’s work was mainly portraits until 1970, when she moved into the country, living at Henfield, Sussex. For 20 years, she commuted yearly to Rhodesia, where she held 23 one-person shows. The family exhibited 96 times at the Royal Academy – Averil (54), Charles (27) and Veronica (15). Charles died in 1956, at 87, outliving Averil who had a fatal heart attack in 1949, at 66. The glamorous Veronica, a devotee of fast cars and gardening, never married, but, after an adventurous life, returned to Sussex where she passed away in 1998 at 89.

During the Second World War, the British War Artists’ Advisory Committee commissioned portraits to document participants for the U.K. and keep up public morale. Very few portraits were produced of contributors to the war effort who were not white. One exceptional example is British artist Leslie James Cole's painting of Sergeant Van Omoheusen of the ATS in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). In 1947, it was transferred to the Imperial War Museum in London. It is a half-length portrait of ATS Sergeant Van Omoheusen. Her rank, Company Quartermaster Sergeant, indicates a position responsible for the company's wagon and its contents, including supplies, equipment, and sometimes even the company library. The painting depicts her in a relaxed pose, wearing her ATS uniform. She is portrayed with a neutral facial expression, her dark eyes looking directly ahead. Her short wavy black hair is styled in a neat fashion, partially obscured by her askew military cap. She wears a light khaki-colored uniform with visible buttons, lapels, and a belt. The uniform's fabric texture and the stitching are subtly rendered, adding realism. The lighting suggests a soft, diffused light source from the front and slightly above, creating a gentle balance of light and shadow. The background subtly fades into a muted peachy-tan color, drawing attention to the woman and creating depth in the portrait. Cole has employed a palette of muted, earth tones (khaki, brown, and peach) in the painting. There is visible brushwork, which contributes to a textured look. When the Second World War broke out, Cole joined the RAF, but was discharged on medical grounds. The War Artists' Advisory Committee also refused his first attempt to work as a war artist. In 1943, Cole was awarded his first full-time WAAC commission and went on to become one of the Committee's most productive artists.

The woman in this painting is depicted in the British Pre-Raphaelite ideal of beauty with her pale face, full lips, and thick, wavy, chestnut hair. Painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of 19th-century British artists and writers. They admired early Italian Renaissance art (pre-Raphael) and advocated the direct observation of nature, in contrast to what they saw as the insincere and overly polished British academic style. Beatrice dominates the composition, but Dante can be seen in the background, comforted by the winged personification of Love. In 1861, Rossetti published a translation of the Vita Nuova (New Life) by his namesake Dante Alighieri (1265–1321), a series of autobiographical sonnets detailing Dante’s unrequited love for Florentine belle Beatrice Portinari. The Salutation of Beatrice illustrates lines from the second sonnet in Vita Nuova. His translation begins, "My lady looks so gentle and so pure. When yielding salutation by the way, That the tongue trembles and has nought to say, And the eyes, which fain would see, may not endure". At the Toledo Museum of Art, you can read the entire poem—both in the original Italian and in Rossetti’s English translation—on the gilded frame, which Rossetti designed specifically for this painting.
