Here’s one for #PoemsAbout #DeepCuts many thanks to @alanparrywriter.co.uk and @thebrokenspine.co.uk
Cut They cut the payment but the cold stayed. The meter still warned that credit was low. The fridge still hummed around an empty shelf. A mother still counted coins at the till, put back the fruit Nothing was lifted. Not the damp. Not the debt. Not the ache of making less reach further. But elsewhere a headline sharpened. A voice said scrounger, another said fraud, and slowly the distance widened. It became easier to look away. Easier to believe hunger had been chosen, that poverty was a habit, that need was somehow evidence against the needy. The cut did not make suffering smaller. It only made the circle of sympathy smaller. Cui bono?

Scar I trace it once more. That small smudge, a strawberry-juice stroke on soft, pale skin. Strange how a moment that split me open left almost nothing for the eye to find. If only the wound that never surfaced could close as quietly.

Is there such a thing as a Cusack Bonus when playing Deep Cuts? @jimpiddock.bsky.social was looking for one bonus point for being @johncusack.bsky.social brother-in-law. I offered a 1,000 if he told him about our podcast.

Good morning! Happy Friday! Here's my poem for #PoemsAbout #DeepCuts. It's hard not to think of our poor planet with all the crazy weather everywhere--though it's actually beautiful here this morning after yesterday's storms. Thank you to @alanparrywriter.co.uk and @thebrokenspine.co.uk
Poem: Ebb and Flow Furrowed brows of dusty ground bulldozed, drilled, deep cuts under deep sea, slashed, sliced, suctioned, sifted over ciphers of ancient life, where spirits dance and ghost forests stand sentinel unburied treasures uncovered in earth-aching splits buildings topple ashes, ashes we all fall down as the wind whirls, gyres widen, the heavens hold their tears release them

to show you
no bleeding heart
but I can talk about
the names of birds and trees
politics wild plums
agricultural policies
and the secret life of a meadow
if you're interested.

I'll Sleep It Off Until I Drift Feeling kind of tired tonight... All I've had are razors, and leftover tears Razors cut my fears.. Still taking up all my time But I doubt that you care like I do, like the last time I tried to sleep that night. My scars do not heal lightly, some are too fresh Why am I still so tangled and so enmeshed.. Blood gathers down through my forearms Down my hand Pretend that I'm alright...again.. And of course I'll sleep it off until I drift. I'm just trying to understand What was I to you? Just some jokes we've exchanged Evening chats... Sunday blues. I swear I don't mean to cry, My razors overwhelm and diffuse The only few things I have of you.. My scars do not heal lightly, some are months old. Someday, some of these new scars will grow too old. Blood gathers down through my forearms Down the floor Pretend that I'm alright again... And of course I'll gather all my thoughts someday. Someday, one day, I'll stop cutting myself for you. Until I'm through I'll be thinking why you Let me break my heart....like that.

I will put a link to a reading in the comments.
TRENCH Along the long abandoned railroad right of way, the scrabbling plow pulls hard, cutting cornrows in the gloomy loam between unneeded, unwelcome developments, hollow husks of framed estate homes held in the death grip of failing banks whose decimated staffs hunger at desks full of unprinted leases begging like pound pups for moneyed elites’ with soft-handed signatures, but relief is rare and the fiscal cupboards as bare as Trump’s delusive tariff shelf. Needing to feel earth, again, I walk barefoot in an unforgiven steel-sliced groove under the grade of the gravel embankment. My little pup negotiates shoulder high mounds as I pull bricks from a frowning furrow. One I pitch at a utility pole and one I throw up on the county road.

Barnsley Cut Stacy winced, Gaynor sighed His sharp knife easily across the saddle including both loin eyes Stacy wanted aloneness, Gaynor followed his into the central spinal bone. Two loin eyes meet at the bone Stacy sick at her throat back, Gaynor a butterfly shape on the plate. Served grilled or pan-fried medium-rare, with mint sauce or redcurrant jelly.

l'amour toujurs that baseline I felt in my heart when dance floors were second home and sanctuary alike your eyes I found then some spell cast by that hypnotic voice nobody knew about autotune and the likes back then — without a care we were slowly fading into the night slaves to a rhythm our feet knew better than our eyes knew of the betrayal once the DJ left and glitter adorned sheet metal was all that was left of our blushing promises

LEGACY by Clare O'Brien Since you died, each note I hear stamps its shape into the soft cement in my head. The chorus looped until I change the record. Your lands are laid waste, relics in a slew of ashes. I say the words and keep the faith, signed and sealed, image captured, branded, authorised. They’d make me deal this poison until it kills me too. Your phosphor shape stalks all my screens, radiating pain. Fallout blind, I run for shelter.

Reminiscing about a singer friend from years ago, a dark time for me. He guided me out of it, though I'm not sure he ever consciously meant to. Now I've started to become a bit disillusioned to who I thought he was, and what it all meant. Regardless, enjoy 🤗

Deep timbre, safety his voice lifting me, broken creature from a cave, cavern of my own making the recesses of my mind. I was seventeen he was a decade older, the first time he sang for me, garage band wonder his voice carried me aloft. When pain came later I tethered thoughts to his sound, he held me, shattered I wouldn't have made it out alive if it weren't for him. As time has passed since I find myself with questions, was it grooming if… did he really save me, and did he ever love me back?
