Saffron laughed. "Don't worry about it. I'm very fierce. What's your name?" The man bit his lip, seemingly weighing something in his mind, before he whispered, "Caleb." "Nice name," Saffron said, grinning. "Suits you." Caleb's tensed shoulders relaxed slightly. "Thank you? I don't think anyone has ever told me that. Oh, your name is nice too." Saffron couldn't help his giddy little stomps. "I think so too! Saffron is the very best of names. Caleb probably falls around the fifth or sixth, but that's still fairly good given how many names there are in the world." A short, surprised laugh escaped from Caleb. It startled him far more than Saffron. Well, of course Caleb was happier. Saffron had done a great job looking after him. Caleb was left with a small, unsure smile that matched well with his big, tawny eyes. Saffron was tickled.

#FaveLineFriday Once I found a start to TNS chapter 5 that I actually liked, writing it turned into a *lot* of fun. Downside is that though there are a lot of good moments, not all of them can fit in a snip. :') Here's one that *can*:
“Yes, but how did you meet?” Tabitha asked, leaning in. “You’ll have to forgive her,” Loloro said. “Tabitha has a weakness for a certain type of literature popular with the young ladies of today. The kind where young, virile commoners sweep countesses off their feet . . . and do much, much more thereafter.” A blush ignited Tabitha’s face, and she reeled backwards. “Loloro!” “Tell me I’m wrong!” Loloro responded with a wolfish look her way. “We’re just friends,” Mick said quickly.

She asked whether Ata knew the order of Idris’ chivalric measure. When no answer was given, this squire picked up a small relic off that shelf. It looked similar to earmuffs, except for a thin cable which connected them to a box. Once they were properly fitted, Bedwyn pressed a small button. Shrill, ecstatic music flooded Ata’s ears. “This is Arms Race, by The Partisans!” Both girls banged their heads as the elder ruffled that dirt-black hair, “to become a squire I had to fix up pre-calamity tech. To be a knight I’ll need to make something new.” [End]

Tae gets to learn a little more about Bell's long, storied life. But what's this at the end? Wonder what that's about.
Bell considered his words for a moment. "The last time we talked about my life, where did I leave off?" Tae chuckled softly. "New Orleans." Their smile returned. "Do you want to hear about Chicago?" "Is that where you went next?" Tae asked. "Mhm," Bell replied, closing their eyes. "Tell me about it," Tae prompted. Already the memories were filtering up through the darkness of their mind, old but far from forgotten. "I was a journalist in Chicago," they began, settling easily into the story of their life. Tae listened, making little comments here and there, asking questions that Bell clarified for him. Bit by bit, they relaxed. Deep in the back of their mind, however, the dread remained, looming over them just like the low moon on the night they met.

“How can you eat that?” Artemisia asked after Johan was out of earshot. “We still don’t know what he puts in it.” Near as she could tell, Johan’s so-called “spicemeat” was a mixture of ground up scraps of pork mixed with a nondescript something that may or may not have included actual spices. It tasted fine, good even, but Artemisia could not escape the fact that she had no idea what she was actually eating. Mylia had no such qualms, and she shrugged as she scooped another handful into her mouth. “Because it’s really good.” Comet hopped down from her shoulder to sit down close enough to Mylia’s plate to be threatening. She inched it away, but did flick a piece of spicemeat out of the pile of eggy rice his direction. The familiar snapped it in his jaws before it could hit the table, licking his whiskers and eyes begging for more. She assumed a defensive position over her plate, staring Comet down with all the fierceness of a dragon guarding a horde.

Bonus Q: Ki'in gives out free books
There was no healing from it. Ki’in often felt aes entire life a scar—his entire being a scar in the world. Those Devlin could see were simply part of existing. The shudder didn’t stop, and ae huddled, sheltered, for once, as his body trembled under the weight of all things lived with too great to be ignored and too terrible to face. Ki’in hadn’t grown through aes life—ae’d been made. Carved. Left alone. And the leaving had been the mercy.

"Loot. Burn. Kill. Terrorize. I shan't tell you how to do you job. Pay them the favor back until we are even." Her hand danced back and forth as she spoke, conducting each item on the list. When it finished its task, she let it return to Vita's neck, smoothing against the red indents on the back. "The seal. So if I am caught-" "Then I have never known you." Her fingers disappeared from Vita's scales, closing the jewelry box in a single motion.

Hooray!! I finally have something good to share! This is from the unicorn short story I’ve been working on! 🌌

BonusQ: There was a whole horror movie called “Death of a Unicorn” - imagine that but in medieval-ish fantasy times!
It was odd yet awe inspiring to walk with a being made of starlight. Part of Pim wanted to cover the unicorn, hide it away so that no one would discover it. But secreting away such beauty would have been a sin. He couldn’t imagine hiding away the unicorn anymore than hiding away the stars themselves.

He turned slowly, stance low and sword raised. A pack of gwyllgwn with coal-black fur, ten voices strong. Those wild dogs growled, a ravenous melody which nipped at him from the shadows. Unsteady breaths rattled against that mask, while its goggles blinkered this knight. His sword shook, grip stiff as he waited for them to pounce. Sir Corbyn halted, trapped on a step-less island amidst a bleak sea. Yet beneath those storm-whipped waves it was calm. So, a canny hand drifted toward that caged flame and snuffed out the light. Plunged into darkness, this venerable knight’s blade drifted no more. He let himself drown in its brine, until they were as one. Sir Corbyn, the Seaborne. [End]

#FaveLineFriday This week was a lot of editing and rewriting, but honestly? The most fun I had was a *lot* of worldbuilding. Both WIPs received a dollop of it, but my favorite might be TNS's, for finally spelling out how the magic system works.

Lord Albert withdrew his hands as the implication hung heavy between them. A light mage like him could get in Eleanor’s way—perhaps even as much as someone who couldn’t use magic at all. Solar elements like light and fire sat right next to celestial elements like heart and lightning on the elemental wheel; they covered none of each other’s weaknesses, nor complimented each other’s strengths. It wasn’t bad to have two elements that acted in practically the exact same way, but when you’re out in the wild, facing down monsters of every element in the book, it was better to have elemental variety—opposites, in other words. For celestial magic, that was lunar: water, space, shadow. And for solar, like Lord Albert’s light? Terrestrial magic. Earth. Mick’s stubbornly latent element.
