Spotted sun orchid (Thelymitra ixioides) near Hyam's Beach, NSW - another coastal location where most of the flowers have no spots. Flowering had already pretty much finished here in mid-September with only a handful of plants still out. #orchids #inthefield #ozplants #biodiversity

Grevillea buxifolia (grey spider flower) flowering in the garden near Corunna, NSW. Another attractive sandstone species which is unfortunately not common in cultivation down my way (may be easier to find closer to Sydney or in Victorian native plant nurseries). #grevilleas #gardening #ozplants

Still some amazing diversity in the roadside orchid species near Mallacoota, VIC at the start of Nov. with good numbers of beard and onion orchids out, the occasional large duck and the last few spotted sun orchids finishing up. Not bad for a fairly dry spring ... #orchids #ozplants #biodiversity

Interesting tiny sun orchid (Thelymitra sp.) near Mallacoota, VIC. If not a late season deformity then this is probably the smallest sun orchid flower I've come across - tip of my little finger here for scale. Only one flower out - maybe T. brevifolia (pepper-top sun orchid)? #orchids #ozplants

Caladenia hillmanii (purple-heart fingers) near Hyams Beach, NSW. This is a good location to see this early spring-flowering orchid with some nice variations out from as early as late August. #Orchids #OzPlants #Biodiversity #Botany #Spring #InTheField #Caladenia #BloomScrolling #WildFlowers

First flying duck (Caleana major - large duck orchid) of the spring near Genoa, East Gippsland, VIC. Only a few scattered plants out in flower here but quite a few more of these very distinctive orchids in bud nearby - despite the recent dry conditions. #orchids #inthefield #ozplants

Purple donkey orchid (Diuris punctata) variations in heathland on the edge of Croajingolong NP, VIC. Flower colour here ranges from purple to pale pink with some forms possibly hybrids with the blotched donkey orchid (D. meridionalis ms) which has been recorded nearby in the past. #orchids #ozplants

From a couple of weeks ago in the hills around Perth in Western Australia, some Blue Lady Orchids (Thelymitra crinita). These lovely #orchids have finished flowering now and have hopefully set seed #biodiversity #ozflora #ozplants #WildOz 🌿

Last purple donkey orchids (Diuris punctata) for the yr in Croajingolong NP, VIC (mid-Nov). Good to see increased numbers of these beautiful orchids at this location in a season where spring rainfall was fairly low and many other orchids were harder to find than usual #ozplants #orchids #inthefield

This colourful display is gadigalbudyari, or Christmas bells (Blandfordia nobilis), a flowering plant endemic to NSW and blooming right now in local bushland. So lovely!🌼

First flying ducks (Caleana major - large duck orchid) of the spring near Jervis Bay, NSW. Out pretty early here compared to the ducks I see most seasons further south in East Gippsland - often as late as mid-November. #orchids #inthefield #ozplants #biodiversity #wildflowers

Caladenia hillmanii (purple-heart fingers) in open forest at Jervis Bay, NSW. Some variation in flower size, shape and colour at this location with some plants not having the distinctive maroon labellum side-lobes this species is known for. #Orchids #OzPlants #InTheField #Spring

Another interesting small sun orchid (Thelymitra sp.) near Gipsy Point, VIC. If not a late season deformity then could be the smallest spotted sun orchid (T. ixioides) form I've seen. Only one flower out -maybe a hybrid with T. pauciflora (or similar) which grow nearby #orchids #ozplants #inthefield

Grevillea macleayana flowering in coastal heathland near Ulladulla, NSW. These coastal plants with mostly entire, elliptic leaves + semi-prostrate habit when young offer a lot as garden plants - but I'm not sure when I last saw one available in a nursery or native plant sale. #grevilleas #ozplants

Copper beard orchid (Calochilus campestris) variations north of Mallacoota, VIC. Good numbers of this widespread and variable species out in roadside heathland at the start of November - with a nice range of beard styles on show! #orchids #ozplants #inthefield #EastGippsland #biodiversity

Purple donkey orchid (Diuris punctata) still flowering in mid-November on the edge of Croajingolong NP, VIC. Lightly blotched forms are possibly hybrids with Diuris meridionalis ms (blotched donkey orchid) but still no sightings of this rare species at this location #ozplants #orchids #inthefield

Sun orchids (Thelymitra sp.) at the back of my house at Corunna, NSW finally finished up flowering in early Nov, almost a month to the day after the first early flowers appeared. A lot of variations in this patch of 150+ plants -maybe T.peniculata and/or T. pauciflora #orchids #ozplants
