Zelfportret - de koel grijze kleuren accentueren enkel zijn verlegen gezicht en handen | Self-portrait – the cool grey colours merely accentuate his shy face and hands.

Gustave Courbet wasn’t just painting a nude.
No gods, no myths, no idealization; just real life.
Realism was born. This was the birth of Modernism.
A total break from the status quo.

The Umbrellas by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, c. 1881-1886, The National Gallery, London (UK)

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Impressionism #Realism
This painting places us in a busy Parisian street close to six principal figures who fill the foreground. A milling crowd behind them almost completely blocks out the boulevard beyond. The top quarter of the picture is mostly filled by a canopy of at least a dozen umbrellas. Painted in two stages, with a gap of around four years between each stage, it shows the change in Renoir's art during the 1880s, when he was beginning to move away from Impressionism and looking instead to classical art. The group on the right, which includes a mother and her two daughters and the woman in profile in the centre, is painted in a characteristically Impressionist manner with delicate feathery touches of rich luminous tones. On the left of the composition, completed during the second stage, Renoir adopted a more linear style. The figures here, including the full-length young woman and the man standing behind her, have clearly defined outlines, precisely drawn features and a greater sense of three-dimensional form.

All done with this Jon Snow watercolor 🎨 what do you think?

Really rocky start with this one, it’s the smallest face I’ve done, I usually blow up the face a lot more.

Shore House by George Bellows, 1911, Private Collection

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Realism #AmericanRealism
The turbulent surface of the ocean consumes the left quadrant of the composition. A pale blue house, stark against the ochre earth, anchors the right foreground. Jagged waves crest and crash against the cliff face. Adjacent to the dwelling, a solitary utility pole pierces the sky. Thick impasto builds the frothing sea foam, lending it a visceral materiality. The rapid application of paint across the landscape imbues the scene with an urgent energy. This dynamic handling of form suggests a world where nature's power asserts itself against human habitation. The house, small and isolated confronts an indifferent, vast expanse. This directness in representation echoes a burgeoning American realism, capturing the rugged spirit of coastal life. A palpable sense of exposure pervades the scene The muted tonalities of the sky press down, intensifying the drama of the water. Shore House was created during a period of transition in American art, bridging the gap between Realism and Modernism. Bellows, while initially associated with the Ashcan School's gritty depictions of urban life, increasingly turned to landscapes and scenes of leisure. This work reflects the influence of European Modernism, particularly the emphasis on formal elements and expressive brushwork, but retains a distinctly American sensibility. It's part of the broader movement towards abstraction and a rejection of traditional academic painting.
