Knurled London, after the rain
A narrow cobbled London mews after the rain, its old brick buildings, lamps and glistening wet street rendered in dramatic monochrome. A lone man in a bright yellow high-vis vest remains in colour, creating a vivid contrast against the rain-darkened surroundings, with his fluorescent reflection caught on the wet cobbles. Edited from the original photograph to monochrome the surroundings and add the after-rain effect.

The north door at St Edward’s Church, Stow-on-the-Wold, Cotswolds, has an ancient and knobbly yew tree on each side of the door. It is thought it may have inspired Tolkien for “Doors of Durin.”

Tolkien was a professor at Oxford University which is not far away and he was known to have visited the Cotswold and Stow in particular. The Doors of Durin are in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. This church porch was built about 300 years ago with the yew saplings planted at the same time. They are now part of the architraves of the door.

All of its "leaves" are in the foreground, then the long strands from the kelp are tangled into a large knot with more tangled kelp leaves. Off in the distance there are more piles of kelp, a sandy beach, dunes covered with vegetation, and finally the three smoke stacks from an abandoned power plant in Morro Bay. The foreground is in sharp focus, and the sea mist gives the dune and smoke stacks a more ephemeral appearance.
