Ñandutí, Paraguayan lace. The name means "spider web" in Guaraní, the official, indigenous language of the country. Due to Spanish colonialism, it is related to Tenerife lace #WomensArt

Ñanduti, Paraguay's embroidery
legend has it the natives invented it by observing spiders' cobwebs
how big was my disappointment after learning as adult that it's derived from Canary Islands spaniard ladies 😅 but well 🤷🏻‍♂️ still a beautiful tradition

One of the most important parts of our clothing is the ñanduti (which means "spider web" in Guarani), a tradicional lacing made in our country!

Did you know that Paraguay not only has Spanish as its official language, but also Guaraní, which is a native language? :D

The stencil for the Guaraní panel is so pretty! In their cosmovision, the Milky Way is known as “the Tapir's Path” bc it looks like light shining on crumpled leaves on the forest floor. The stars on the stencil were made from Ñandutí lace, a Paraguayan traditional textile. #SkyhorseCarousel #sciart

This example is a lot coarser than some of the very fine white lace. They sew it onto the stretched cloth, then cut the cloth away. Mothers pass the skill down to daughters.

I put some small touch ups on this lattice hand tattoo representing #Nanduti patterns from Paraguay. We also did Victoria across their knuckles representing their grandmother. #Dcartist #dctattooartist #nandutitattoo #handtattoo #queertattooartist #gaytattooartist #twinbulltattoo

Leyend of the Ñandutí 🧵

The legend tells the story of a beautiful and kind woman named Samimbi. Two brave Guaraní warriors were in love with her: Jasyñemoñare (Son of the Moon) and Ñanduguasu (Big Spider).
