Ürümchi was known in Chinese as Dihua 迪化 ("Enlighten and civilize"): The name had been given in 1760 after the conquest and genocide of Dzungaria, and renamed to Wulumuqi 烏魯木齊 in 1954.
The name Ürümchi is from Mongolic, probably "great (pasture)" (cf. Khalkha Mongolian үлэмж). /

There is nothing more enjoyable than an analog airport with hand-written tickets and paper tags for your luggage. In 25 years you'll look back fondly on those flights as I do with the defunct China Xinjiang Airlines and its frightening Tu-154 that got me from Urumchi to Moscow via Novosibirsk.

There is nothing more enjoyable than an analog airport with hand-written tickets and paper tags for your luggage. In 25 years you'll look back fondly on those flights as I do with the defunct China Xinjiang Airlines and its frightening Tu-154 that got me from Urumchi to Moscow via Novosibirsk.

Ürümchi sounds Mongolic, and folk etymology explains it as "great (pasture)" (cf Khalkha үлэмж). However, it might actually be of Turkic origin, as Dai Matsui shows. It is attested as Yirrüṃci̧nä in Khotanese in 925, and Yürüng-čïn in Old Uyghur and Mongol docs. 1/
