🦕 A new dinosaur species revealed: Haolong dongiAn exceptionally well-preserved fossil from the Yixian Formation of China (around 125 million years old) has been described as a new hadrosauroid dinosaur, Haolong dongi. The nearly complete juvenile specimen preserves rare skin impressions featuring previously unknown rows of spines across much of the body, while the tail shows overlapping scales similar to those seen in some earlier ornithischians. These unusual integumentary structures provide rare insight into the diversity of dinosaur skin coverings and were likely used for defensive deterrence rather than display or thermoregulation. The fossil, housed at the Anhui Geological Museum, is named in honor of the late Chinese paleontologist Dong Zhiming. The study was published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, expanding our understanding of early Cretaceous iguanodontian evolution.Funny detail: the final image shows an artwork created by @dragonsofwhales back in 2021, depicting a quilled and spiky iguanodon—remarkably similar to this newly described dinosaur. Our guess is that time travel might be involved… but we can’t be sure.Credits to @fabio_manucci for the illustrations.#iguanodon #haolongdongi #dinosaurs #dinosaur #discovery
